No, not just a story.

I guess the Germans decided that would be cute trick to add to the tranny. If you hold the shifter to the left for 1-2 seconds, the tranny will downshift to the lowest available gear. That is all. Or you just repeated push it left but, it will stop at the lowest available gear again.

Makes sense. So I may want to leave it in D in a highway roll and hold the lever left for 2 sec's and let the car figure out the best gear to have it in at that speed. Then I can determine if that gear is low enough. If not I can then just tip it down one more.

Thanks

You won't be able to go lower at that point. The tranny calculates the rpm's and knows that one more downshift will put past the redline. As I said, it downshifts to the lowest available gear. It is not nessesarily the best gear for that speed.

The wifeys 2006 C230 has Tiptronic, I think, I never drive it but seem to remember down shifting by tapping shifter to the left and visa -versa. Im not calling the shift change Speedshift though. Her tranny takes a day to shift a gear. Not mine, because I have Speedshift software. With mine I only use it to slow the beast down.

i love just using the paddles if i am passing the ever abundant old ladies who are driving 40 in the left hand lane when its a 70mph zone. I use the actual shifter if i am smoking and need to downshift.

I don't use the feature very often, but when I find myself on curvy mountain roads here in Northern California, it comes in handy. I like being able to downshift and then power through the turns. Great fun!

i just use it every now and then to downshift when slowing down, a throttle blip on downshift would be nice, so i have to do it myself

BTW, I don't know what the point of bouncing of the rev limiter is. The 2006 S65 has a different program than the 2006 C55, and I find it much better. It upshifts (quickly -- or should I say Speedily) at redline, which is much more useful if you're trying to go fast.
