Is there a coating on the inside of the valve cover?

I'm finally getting around to replaceing my right valve cover gasket again (both were done under warranty the last time). Once I got the valve cover off and started cleaning it, it looks like there is/was a coating (paint??) on the inside of the valve cover and in the groove for the seal that is coming off. Has anyone seen this before? It makes me a little nervous now that I know. Nothing has shown up in my oil analysis, but I'm afraid it might now that I've disturbed it.

No coating, "gasket" is a sealant and you might be seeing the edge of that. When I did my gaskets I wire brushed the inside of the covers until they were shiny.
