Q RE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT SUPERCHARGER

I have a 2002 C32 AMG. I just got it back a couple weeks ago from shop and was told I will need to replace my supercharger belt - that it was slapping kind of causing the car to vibrate when idling, but that I had some time. Also, was told that there's a modification so that my car is almost always using the supercharger. Anyway last night I was driving in summer mode and had a nice stretch of road so I was accelerating - when the car felt like it caught, made some grumbling noises, I slowed down and came to a traffic stop. My check engine light was on and it was seriously out of control with the vibrations. I was close to home, so I drove slow and pulled into garage. I opened hood and turned it on while in park - but while in park there wasn't the same vibrations/noises as when idling in drive.... anyway, I don't know too much - but everything looked okay. I could see the supercharger belt and the idlers and everything seemed intact and fine. Obviously I have to take it somewhere, but my mechanic charges an arm and leg for diagnostics; so just curious any tips on being able to tell whats wrong/or getting idea of cost? Thanks!

You can get something simple to read the codes on your own http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mercedes-Benz-C-CL-CLK-CLASS-Code-Reader-Scanner-OBD2-/221366365595?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item338a76ad9bor get one of the apps for your phone and an OBD2 cable. This setup will not read the hidden codes, but it is a very inexpensive beginners solution.
