Can a scan code of P0455 be caused by a bad gas cap or...
by the vapor canister purge valve? I rather replace the cheapest thing first and caps are around $40 (maybe less) and the purge valve is $80. The latter does not look too hard to change wondering is there more to pulling th two hoses and electrical connector off and swapping out?

Doesn't pulse. You have p0455 gross leak code.
If the purge valve was blocked or not running when it was supposed to
(during the self test of the smog emissions system at start up or when excess fuel fumes needed to be drawn off) you would have a code for those faults
P0443 Evaporative Emission Control System Purge Control Valve Circuit Malfunction
P0444 Evaporative Emission Control System Purge Control Valve Circuit Open
P0445 Evaporative Emission Control System Purge Control Valve Circuit Shorted
You can't have a p0455 code with an inoperative purge valve circuit since it needs to be operating to trigger the gross leak code.
Your purge valve is working....you have a leak in the system someplace.
Looking at or flipping the gas cap gasket is only the start of the process in tracking the leak. Replace the cap with a dealer cap. See if the code clears after several drive cycles,if not get out the flashlight and start inspecting everything from the filler neck to the vacuum lines of the emissions circuit
If you can't locate it after all that you need to get it smoked.
