How does your c32 do in the extreme cold?

Hi,

I am in Boston and we have been having some sub zero temps and my c32 was parked outside. Whenever I would go inside the car I would hear a loud whirring noise like maybe the a/c is running type noise. Then it would slowly go away when I start it. Also I noticed that it is very weird in the cold like the shifts seem to take a longer. I don't push it but even going up to like 4000 rpms it seems like when I let off the speedshift doesn't know to downshift for quite a long time. The revs just stay. Also I thought I heard some chassis creaks or snaps I can't explain it really, just some light popping noises when I would push on a curve. I dunno about that could be the cold tires too (but they are snows so usually they can stand the cold).

How does your c32 do in the extreme cold? All of you northern c32 owners how do you warm up the car?

Thanks,

Prasith

I havent any experience of the C32 in cold or hot yet, but I do recoginize most of what you say from my experiences in the cold with; Lexus IS200, Audi RS4, Dodge Durango, Jeep GC.
(exept for that whirring noise)

Does your problems go away when the car has reached full working temperature and you drove it with that for about 5-10minutes?

The noise from the chassis might be some ice, or just that the metal is cold.

When my cars are cold, I drive them very easy untill they have reached full w. temperature.

I think the whirring noise may be my air pump. I am not sure but it doesn't seem to happen when it is warmer.

Also once the car warms up the noise is gone. Does take a while to warm up though when it is that cold.

LOL,

No it didn't get that cold thank god what we had was cold enough.

I don't doubt a merc's ability to run in the cold but it just seems like my audi did better in the extreme cold, until I modded it.

It also takes longer to warm up than my audi.

Mine takes a while to warm up as well, i contantly watch the coolant temp on the dash, and it doesnt get moving for a while. Keeping the car in the garage helps a lot.

I live in Maryland, and its been cold here also. The car takes about 6-9 minutes to warm up, key is to watch the coolent temp. (I think that was said above). When I first take off, the steering is VERY heavy, but settles out within a block or so. There are a couple of creaks here and there. They also settle out within a minute or two. I guess at single digit air temp and below zero windchill, most everything gets creaky! Other than that, it operates fine.

I used to live in boston, so I had the same experiences..... I never noticed the whirring sound, but about the rev thing.... I think the car is really REALLY cold, and by reving up the car, the engine would warm up quicker. I believe once the car is warm enough, it is going to go away. What I did, was drive very slowly around to warm up the car before going on the highway/anything else.......

I think you guys are forgetting something very important...

You do all know what cold weather does for supercharged engines right?

AUTOVIAGRA!

Anyone pushed a warmed up C32 in real cold weather? Notice any difference.

With 24K miles the heated seats work very well here in Ohio with 4F currently. I have not experienced the whinning noise and do think it is abnormal. Have the dealership keep the car over night to give it a cold start in the morning.

Mine, like other manufacturer's auto-tranny, tends to keep the RPMs up and shifts slow when first started at this tempature. Suspension is super stiff like any other car near zero degrees. No noises from mine.

I do notice that with light braking for the daily commute the rusted rotors from moisture is taken about +50% of my front pads and just turned on my brake pad wear indicator. Their toast!

I plan on getting a pair of front rotor cyro-treated to help avoid cracks around the cross drilled holes.

Thank you Bilal! If you didn't say it I was.

Cold C32 = Happy C32 A LOT better for the supercharged engine!

In fact, performance of supercharged engines are heavily influenced by altitude and weather conditions - it favors cooler weather.

GREAT SUSPENSION!

I agree Norm. I love my suspension @ -23 Celcius

Unfortunatedly, I can't seem to post my Dashboard Display showing the aforementioned temp reading.

Has anyone hit Less than -23C ?? Or can I claim this c32 Milestone:p

-23F is definitely a milestone !!!

My car also has that whirrrrrrring noise; it sounded like some weak electric motor is working. I also noticed that Mercs heater really sucks. The loaner car (Camry) I picked up from dealer's lot heats up much quicker than Merc. Also, the highest blast of heater on Merc only matches maybe 1/2-2/3 the full blast from those Jap cars. I hate cold weather + lack of heating package.

Yes -23 is very low. I hit -6 in New Hampshire during this cold spell.

dfc,

Did you notice the noise too. It is on when the car is off and it has been cold for a while. If it is warm I don't notice it.

As for the heating it does take a long time to heat up the car. If the center vents are turned down it is not too bad and the car heats up nicely once it does warm up but my audi and my old honda would heat up much faster. Especially japanese cars they heat up so fast. Funny I always thought it would be colder in germany.

Where do you service your car? New Country in Hartford? That is where I take mine. What do you think of their AMG knowledge?

Are you in east hartford? I have friend over there on east river drive in the condos by the river. Maybe we can compare cars if i come down to visit him.

Send me a pm.

This is quite an old thread, but I seem to be experiencing the same problem (noise when car's cold), but I am not seeing any solution around here...

My thread is linked below, so if anyone knows how to fix it (aside from warming up the car) do let me know:

iam out in N.Y.C and we just dealt with a nice ice drop snow storm.the same thing in the cold, with my c55 at one point I was hearing a noise under the hood I contacted a friend that works at the dealer ship and he quoted that in these cars, the motor revs high so the temp level goes up and with stand the oil movement quick as possible to heat the motor up.
