Window Tinting
Anyone have pictures with their cars (body color: silver) tinted??
Any problems with those metallic tint paper? Will Mercedes void the warranty if we do so?
Thanks.

yup got a silver car with black tint. I had it done and it required quite some skill but it's all cool now. Won't void warranty.. why should it anyway? MB is offering tinted windows with the C and E-Class stationwagon..
since I cannot post pics, drop me your mail addy and I'll send you a pic.

Moleskin is a soft, felt like material that has a self adhesive backing. CR Lawrence makes moleskin and it is avaialbe in 100 foot rolls in various widths. The moleskin is applied to the inner window guides/scrappers so that the felt rubs up against the tint rather than the hard rubber guide/scrapper.
The hard rubber guide/scrapper is what is scratching your tint.

Thanks awiner,
Its a shame that my tint guys don't have that kind of stuff on hand. Even if it would have been an extra charge, I still would have paid for it. I brought my car back two days after the tint dried and they claimed I rolled down my windows before they were dry.

Do they need to take the door panels apart in order to install the "moleskin"?
If so, it is a big job to the tint guy or he doesn't know how to take them apart.

Yeah I'm really surprised that mine scratched as well. I used to install tint professionally and never had scratching issues with SunGard Endurance metallic film until I installed it in my car, and it is a scratch resistant film. The rubber strips are to tight!
I might have to retint my car and do the moleskin thing... cause it's too late now.

You do not have to take the entire door panel off if you know what you are doing. However, some of the door panel needs to be pulled back and loosened to really get the rubber scrappers out.
Some installers try to slip the moleskin on the rubber scrappers by using force. This generally doesn't work well.

After having my windows tinted, I lost a considerable amount of radio reception due to the metallic substances in the film. Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, is there a film out there that does not pose this problem?

I just talked to the tint installer, he said there will be no problem for the tint paper. He will replace the paper as long as I own the vehicle w/o charge.
I don't listen to the AM stations; therefore, it is no harm to me. However, the metalic paper only affects those weak AM stations.
By the way, "Sun-Gard" has various type of tint papers. I believe using the best ones would be fine.
I will tint the car this Saturday. I will post the "after-tint" result.

AM reception...
flymd90, some have complained that they "lost" AM & door lock key range after tinting. The culprit seems to be a very weak connection of the applicable antenna. It appears that when the installer is doing the rear window tint he/she has to be very careful along the headliner as placing undue pressure on this may damage the antenna connection.

I just got my tint done. I forgot the percentage, it is very close to limo tint. Mine is illegal, but whatever.
I was having some trouble locking and unlocking my car, I went to my dealer and they told me the reason is because of the tint and they suggested I strip it. No thanks...If you hold the key right at the door handle, there is an emergancy signal you can use if you also have this problem.

I had my window tinted last saturday.
I did not roll down my windows after tinted since the glue inside the paper needed to be settled / dried (as per instruction).
Last night, I rolled down the windows up and down for a few times, no scratch was found.
It seems okay with my tint papers and installer. Hope it would no need to go back for any remedial works.
