Knocking / Tapping Sound During Startup

It went away after a couple of minutes but no clue what it is. Sounds as if something is tapping right above the steering column close to the instrument gauge.

I'm pretty sure it is your ventilation controls. The motors have plastic arms that are known to break. The clicking could be the motor shaft spinning in the broken arm. If the noise is coming from the center of the dash, somewhere buried deep inside, it likely the problem.
While the car is running, try a few settings like air recirculating, air to windshield, to feet, etc. If you hear the click again, you've found the cause. Parts are pretty cheap. You may also have warm at vents, and cold at feet, or different temps each side of the car. All symptoms of broken levers or bad motors.
Bad news is you have to almost rip the dash out to get to it. Search the W203 forum (not AMG) for a picture DIY of how to do this.
My car actually has a bad motor (according to the SDS), but I have been stalling on replacing it due to the volume of work for a $10 used part. And I don't notice it broken.
