AC delete or replace compressor? I need to make a quick decision

Hi all,

I am in a bit of a bind. My ac compressor has gone south and it is about $1000 to repair it. I don't mind bypassing it but what belt do I use? Has anyone done this? My only mod is a 65mm SC pulley otherwise everything is stock.

Thanks in advance.

I agree, but this is fast becoming a track car.

Take a rope and run it around all the pulleys minus the AC. Then measure and buy the appropriate belt. Remember that your tensioner gives you a little extra play room.

Here is additional data on some belts. I guess you would need something shorter than OEM.

length mm Width mm Ribs
K081145 2910 28 8 OEM
K081153 2939 28 8 Gates
K081153 2927 8 GoodYear
K081177 2990 28 8 Gates

I got the full quotes today. they range from 1550 - 1800 out the door. I am really leaning towards bypassing it but, no one has done it. Is there a reason not to besides the obvious lack of cold air?

If it is just a track car then mine as well bypass the A/C. No need to take away horsepower

No, its not difficult. Most people daily drive their cars and need AC. I did it once before and regretted it but that was not a track car.

Yeah my better half has convinced me to just get it done. I really wanted to put this money into the conductor plate and TC solenoid but I guess that will have to wait.

Thanks for the replies all. i appreciate it.

What exactly is wrong with your A/C? What are the symptoms/definition of "going south" in this case?

The pulley on the condenser is toast. It started making a loud noise and spiting small pieces of metal out. From what I understand you can't get just the pulley and bearing. Also according to MB there is only 4 units left.

I think you can just leave it in place and find a shorter belt to bypass it in the meantime.

I thought about that but it will hit the pulley on the condenser.

I paid the man and it will be ready today. Well... it was ready yesterday but not till 6:30 so I will be picking it up today.

I got the car back working finally $1400 later. Turns out the engine I was told was a 03 c32 is in reality a 03 slk32 motor. Good thing to know when buying parts. Is there anything else I should now that may be different between the two?
