Steering

anyone with c32 notice a dead spot or dead zone with steering wheel, when steering wheel is straight and u move it left & right, it feels like there is a dead spot. It might be steering bushings, or in my head, anyone else notice this.

I notice this on my car on the high way when traveling straight. I can wiggle the steering wheel right and left with out the car reacting. Not a crazy amount, just not what I would expect from a car with an AMG badge on it.

From what I have read, the c32's steering is somewhat sloppy in general but some have replaced two bushings on the rack with significant improvement. Fairly easy and cheap diy from what I remember when reading about it, just need to get it up in the air and I think they are just hand pressed in.

I would love to tackle that, but have a broken window regulator and a toasted bix igniter at the top of list for now.

What's a bix igniter?

Bi-xenon headlight igniter.

Have to replace the igniter with the higher voltage one that Mercedes should have put on our cars from the beginning.

I have been chasing this with my C55 that has just north of 120,000 miles.
One thing of note, my car, when parked in the garage with the ignition off, makes a clunk/knock sound when I wiggle the wheel somewhat quickly CW and CCW in about a 1 inch margin.

My car used to feel tighter when I first got it at around 77,000 miles. It did not make this sound either.

I have replaced, so far:

Front Axle:
-Front struts with Bilstein yellows, replaced the strut mounts and used all new hardware
-Front sway bar links with new hardware
-Front control arms, all 4 with new hardware
-Steering rack bushings, all 4
-Inner and outer tie rods, with new hardware

Rear Axle:
-Rear shocks with Bilstein yellows, replaced rubber donuts at top and used all new hardware
- Rear sway bar links with new hardware

Everything was torqued according to WIS guides.

What is next to try:

- The steering coupler: https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...nt/2034620478/
Why?: It has a rubber component which could have worn out at my car's age and mileage.

- The steering rack: $,$$$
Why?: From searching around it seems that non-AMG W203 and W209 owners have had success replacing their steering rack with new or rebuilt units. They apparently wear out internally to the point where steering feel starts to feel too light and sloppy.

- Front sway bar bushings, though not directly tied to steering, they must be due by now.

- Front wheel bearings, this will not likely do anything for the steering, but at 120,000 miles, they could probably at the very least use a grease repack.

- I also need to go through the rear subframe bushings and all the rear control arms, if they are as bad as the front 4 were, replacing them will do wonders for the car's road feel.

I still enjoy my 12 year old, 120,000 mile AMG, but being a bit of a perfectionist, I want my car to drive like it did new. I just wish I had time to pull the car off the road for 4 weeks and go through every single rubber suspension/steering part and replace them all.

At the same time, this car's value is now below $10,000, sinking money into it is stupid, but when you love your car and this hobby, it is too fun to let financial sense come between you and the car.

I have same problem, I call it a dead spot in steering wheel, I think it's the steering bushings there are 3 of them, u can get them from esc tuning. My car only has 67,000 miles. I think it's the age of the bushings. I changed links and sway bar bushings, front sway bar bushings where toast

I had this same issue; my mechanic found a loose clamp between the upper and lower steering column shafts, tightened it up, and the problem went away. That was about 50,000 miles ago (I have over 200k on it now and the steering is tight)
