The dealers say only they can do it due to matching the VIN to the new key, etc., etc.. Others have said that's bull and the proper key from Amazon or eBay will work but just needs programmed correctly.

I guess I'm not helpful and want to know as well.

So the insides are OK and you just need the housing?
I bought a housing on eBay and swapped out the internals. There's a vid on youtube that shows how to do it

Here is a good thread with all the info you need:

Hopefully you don't get bored reading about the circuit boards.

Hello,

Dealers do not have the ability to program these as it's done by the factory so you can't buy one and get them to program it. The black key internals do not fit the chrome key so the best bet would be to replace the housing with the same one or buy a new key. Unless you are good with soldering tiny circuit boards

Anyone know if the metal insert key needs to be cut to fit in the fob? The L shaped one that slides into the fob and has a keyring. I lost my keys and thankfully had the Merc fob off at the time. I've been trying to get another metal key so that I can attach the fob to my new keychain...

Hello,

The metal key does not need to be cut to fit, but it does need to the correct blade key. If you don't have a cut blade key to your vehicle you can't lock your trunk in valet mode lock your glove box or enter the vehicle in the event your battery dies in the key. So I would recommend getting the proper blade for your key. One thing to keep in mind is that the non-cut keys could be after-market and like anything after-market there is no guarantee of proper fitment.

Black key uses 203-766-01-06
chrome key with oval panic button uses 203-766-50-06
chrome key with triangle panic button uses 212-760-19-06

Wicked!! Thanks a lot Jon. I appreciate the parts numbers too, that is likely where I went wrong. I got one for the chrome key, but it doesn't fit so I must not have taken my triangle panic button into account.

You can order the metal blade already cut from the dealer using your VIN. When I swapped my black keys into Chrome boards I had to get new metal keys. I seem to recall they charged like $60/each but they were pre-cut and slid right into the key fobs.

AtlasMG, if you read the thread I linked you'll understand this all much better.
