Attention C55 Owners!

I just spoke with Ryan @ Wavetrac (Aliso Viejo,Ca.) inquiring as to why they don't manufacture and market a limited slip differential for the C55 AMG. He stated there is no demand! I then asked if Wavetrac ever conducted a market study to determine what demand there might be? He said no!
I asked him what he needed to determine what demand existed and if there at least 20 to 25 car positive response; obtain a factory stock C55 differential to determine what would be required to build LSD; then them manufacturing cost could be estimated with a possible group buy price.
So, here's the thread to determine the market demand for a LSD for PL Members. If you're seriously interested, please indicate below with your name. By the way, they market a LSD for C63 at $1,095. Let's make this happen!!! Here's their url http://www.wavetrac.net/application.htm

99% sure 48.309.185WK should be the part number. We use the same 215mm rear as E55, C63, SLK55 etc.

Yes. that Is Wavetrac's part number for their E55 LSD. However, according to Mercedes' EPC (Electronic Part Catalog), and confirmed by my parts guy friend @ MB Ontario, the part # for a 2006 E55 AMG (W211076) complete differential is A 2033510305 (housing & differential gear works) which is completely different from the C55 part no. of A203 350 85 64 that is only sold as a reconditioned unit with a core charge. As of today, Ryan @ Wavetrac says they do not make a LSD for the C55. Furthermore, my parts guy says the E55 and C55 differentials are not interchangeable.

To be more specific, it is the part number for ALL of their 215mm axle applications which include the W211 E55 and E63, W212 E63, W204 C63, R230 SL55 (2004 on) and SL65, and R171 SLK55.

I suggest you pm member ROLLNNN, he has a Wavetrac in his CLK55 show car.

Yes; however, thru Renntech the price for a LSD is $3,380 + tax; Weistec sells Wavetrac LSD starting at $1,599.99 but here's the confusion due to the fact that Ryan at Wavetrac stated they don't manufacturer LSD's for C55's!!! Go figure! Fabtech Performance sells teh Quaife LSD for $1,399+ tax; Kleeman's LSD starts at $2,200+ tax, etc.

With a Quaiffe coming in at $1,500 after TT&R, sounds like we need some clarification on what may already fit our cars and whether it's even a worthwhile endeavor.

The E55 and C55 diff ASSEMBLIES do not interchange. The housings are different due to changes in the mounting points. The gear ratios also differ between the C55, E55, and SL55.

Different part numbers.

The catalog does not show the gears themselves. It shows the housing, back cover, and outside attachment parts. One parts interchange example shows the yoke on the front of the pinion fits the C55, CLK55, SLK55, and SLR.
Interestingly, the CLK63 yoke fits nearly every RWD car since the 203.

When I blow the filters out of the catalog things get messy. None of the diff parts interchange with anything other than a 211 or 209. Oddly, when I blow the filters out of an SL55 I run across a differential (rotating part the ring gear bolts to, not the assy) that interchanges with a C320.
That doesn't mean a whole lot coming from Mercedes. They enjoy engineering stuff for lack of a better reason.

Thanks for the reply........If I can get enough interest (at least 20 serious buyers) and provide a C55 OEM differential, Wavetrac will research the initial cost to manufacture and, hopefully, a group buy price, then we're in business!

I only ask because it is the same platform and if it works on the clk55 too you could offer it there an get more people on board.

According to EPC, the clk55 amg part # is A 209 350 85 64 which is identical to the C55, too! However, as with the C55, this part is only available as a reman with a core charge.

Ordered the wavetrac for the normal 215mm diff, as many other poeple have done,for my c55 just yesterday! I will let you know of any complications i may run across, my guess is none(but maybe some grinding, like quaiffe), as i know this has been done before. THE ISSUE IS wavetrac is just unaware that their product works for this other limited production vehicle, that people dont modify as much as e55's or e63's

this seems to be "cost" from most places, i wouldnt go buying until i can verify that it indeed is correct, but i am ALMOST positive there will be no issue.

i havent been able to get to that mod yet, i am still deep in a few other things right now, i will post about it, i am currently looking for bearings for it and seals so that ill have them, does anyone have part #?s
also wanted to swap for more agressive gearing but appears aftermarket is the only way to go and with some people saying it makes noise and requires machining, i dont think i am going to, anyone else wanna chime in?

I beleive the side seals are 2309970346.
Obviously changing the side bearings would give a longer diff life before it would need an overhaul.
However, changing the diff carrier AND the bearings might increase the risk of changing the side-bearing preload, which could mean changing and machining the circlips which also act as shims.
Since my existing side bearings are in good order (no noise), I plan to reuse them.
My Wavetrack is intransit and all going well, I plan on start the project next week.
I will keep you posted.

I beleive the side bearing numbers are: Left 2303500349 and 2303500249 for the Right.

When I ordered the Wavetrack (48.309.185WK) for my C55, I was told there would be a small amount of grinding required to fit the new diff centre. The Wavetrack is now in the housing and I did have to grind a small section to the left side of the housing, as shown at the bottom of the image. The backlash is .19mm which is over the maximum amount (which I believe is .16mm). I will seek advice from a diff engineering firm, to see if this is acceptable, or if the circlips/shims will need replacing/machining.

For what it's worth, you're not getting an accurate reading with the dial indicator in that position. It is at too much of an angle to the movement you are measuring.
Reposition the indicator so it can measure the full value. Maybe poke it straight in on the extreme top or bottom of the gear or sideways across the back of the gear on the tooth sticking out the farthest.

What does your gear contact pattern look like? There's a good chance the pinion gear needs to move in or out to match the new bearings and carrier.

Be aware that used gears rarely give you the best contact pattern but checking it will still give you an idea of what is going on.

I used the existing bearings since they were in good order and I also wanted to minimise the risk of having to reshim. Looks like that didn't work!
I will check with an engineering firm and if recommended to put new bearings and reshim; that's what I will get done.
