Is that something controlled by the ECU?
Wouldn't it be easy to just increase the Air to Fuel ratio for more power on a low end car.. OR if you wanted reliability we could decrese that mixture ratio for maybe a slower but longer lasting car?

yes, that is controlled by the ECU. When you get an aftermarket chip, there are lots of options for things to change. That is why you should always buy a 'chipped' ECU from a reputable tuner, with lots of experience on your car, especially, if your engine has boost.
If the knock sensor automatic ignition retard was defeated in the ECU and the tuner added too much timming in the wrong place and too lean A/F ratio, one could have a very short life for the engine.
The place, where the tuner needs to be very careful is anytime, the engine is under boost, things can go bad, very quickly, if inappropriate tuning decisions are made. Normally, the timing gets retarded, some, and the A/F ratio drops, once one enters boost. This is a programming option.

yes...my 850 turbo with untuned aftermarket ecu runs very rich past 4000 rpm, down to 11.5 sometimes...under 3000 rpm it runs closer to 15 for a/f ratio. most aftermarket ecu are like that... generally anything below 13 and it's considered fairly rich...
