C32 Steering Wheel Upgrade

Well then I guess that almost every modified car featured in European Car and other top mags look stupid with a MOMO or Sparco wheel? I guess those custom GT3 Recaro's will look just as lame in my car as well.

btw, shouldn't there be 8 buttoms total if you relocated them to the center console? I only see 4 in ther picture.

I you thought it through, you would realize that you only need four button to work all functions minus the phone application.
This has nothing to do with "tracking" a car, but driving enjoyment. Do max performance tires handle better than generic all seasons? Yes, but only if you drive to take advantage of thier potential. Same with every other modification. They offer no benefit unless you take advantage of it. The C32's 375mm diameter steering wheel is huge and unnecessary and lacks the steering feel required to drive this car smoothly at its limit, as well as during daily driving manuvers. If you prefer to drive at less than that limit, or don't care to shuffle steer all day long, that's fine, but don't say it is only a fashion statement. Believe me, I would prefer for AMG to furnish an appropriate designed wheel in a 320-350mm size.
Btw, I am removing the brake pedal studded cover and replacing it with the stock rubber cover because it works better by reducing the differential in planes between the throttle and the brake pedals.

Truce. Frank, maybe you would prefer the design of the MOMO "Driver", and can view it at MOMO's website at "momo.it"
As for the buttons, think of this as a puzzle. Six factory buttons with only four buttons to do the same work. How does he do that? It is quite easy and the solution should take about 45 seconds.
Just one more thing, this has nothing to do with the track specfically, but a better fitting steering wheel, custom pedals, and race seat makes you more comfortable in your driving environment and lets you concentrate on the road ahead, and not the distracting discomfort from leaning against the door to brace yourself around the next bend. Anything learned or helpful on the track crosses over to the street

On the 4 buttons - my guess is that the menu buttons on the left work in a loop. You really only need two of them. You just have to keep pushing on one of the menu buttons until your desired display comes up. Then you have 2 more for the right side volume up/down.
Should not cost that much though. Maybe $5 in switches

SMGC32,
You definitely seem like one wacky dude I will give you that. Talking to yourself in threads getting rid of your airbag and whatnot
But I for one am very happy that you are here and a member of these boards to try all these modifications to your car and do the research involved with it. That enables somebody like me with a lot less knowledge and a lot less time and also a lot less crazy (ok maybe not on that one) to look at the work you have done and copy it. Ha Ha I guess I haven't changed much since college.
I think that anybody that drives aggresively whether it be track, canyon, highway off/on ramps will see that the steering wheel is too large and has a crappy turning diameter. Especially when you try to pull your seat up to get an optimal seating position trying to make quick steering adjustments is a total pain in the ****.
I think the aesthetics of the car could be made better mainly because that steering column looks like a friggin tree trunk compared to the thinner wheel. I personally prefer the BMW steering wheel with the carbon fiber inserts in terms of looks but I think the momo is probably the better choice for this car considering the seating position that I would like to have. Even the BMW wheel seems too bulky for optimal steering.
So I really want to know about your custom pedals as that is something I definitely want to do. I am not prepared to forgo an airbag as of yet. So please start up a thread on that and what I would have to do for that. Also any tips you may have on how you are matching revs and doing heel-toe work with this car would also be helpful. You can PM if you would like.
Also I thought that this would be a good time to drop another analogy. Though this one is not as good as my comparison between woman and wheels. The funny thing about asking people's opinions are that Opinions are like ***-holes everybody has one and they all stink
. The only one that really matters is yours (that applies to opinions and ***-holes)
To all who think this wheel stinks

Just my opinion.

Hey Zep, you are right on. You win free laps in my car next time out. Let's see... $500.00 per day divided by an average of 75 laps a day would be about $6.00 per lap value! Hey, that is about the same price as the Silicon Motor Speedway! I don't know which one is crazier to spend money on, and when you break it down in lap cost it feels much better.

Steve, have you considered RAID steering wheels. If you think the c32 steering wheel is bad, I GUARANTEE you will think my 996 wheel is PATHETIC!!
But I have seen some RAID wheels that retain TUV approved Air Bags and come in 320m sizes (but I can't read/order in German)... Let me know what you think.
I personally would like to keep the Air Bag (go figure, and then I've "lightly" driven my 1989 speedster with a removal windshield w/ NO A-Pillar, Momo Corse and No Air bags anywhere @ Mosport ----but I do have a roll-bar

Unfortunately, the Safety Car steering wheel offers no additional benefit to steering performance over the stock wheel. I know what you are going to say... but that wheel has larger indents at 10 and 2. If you are holding your hands at those locations to take advantage of their shape, you need to go back to driving school.
Lap, I have been driving a 996 twin turbo today and all day tomorrow. I am not impressed with its steering wheel either. Way too big, but customer's creature comfort and control buttons come first by way of increased sales volume. Thanks for the RAID suggestion. I will check it out.

Check out legit street cars on YouTube. He did a fantastic video on steering wheel upgrades for AMGs. Can’t rmenebr the company name but they make beautiful products and it’s an easy swap
