thats the problem with the M3's...our speedo's are off, i forgot by how many percent. But using a GPS would be a good way of telling.

The speedo on the M3's are optomistic by about 5-6 Percent so adjust accordingly.

7800 in 5th gear = 168 mph on M3

not sure about the CSL...

6th gear...speed limiter kicks in.

so if u wanna do a top speed run on a M, use 5th gear...unless you get aftermarket software.

Is the csl top speed governed?I know that it makes max hp near 8k so it should pull till the car runs out of gear.

I thought I read that it had different gearing.

2001 m3 had 3.64 2002-2005 has 3.62? or 63 I can't remember,anyway does anyone know wuts in the csl's rear end.

yes, its limited as well. but as i said before, if you ran the car in 5th gear...it'll surpass the 155mph limit and keep on pulling till redline.

So, assuming no electronic intervention, what is the top speed of a stock CSL and a stock "garden variety" M3?

Given that the M3 speedo apparently can't tell the difference between 150 and 160, it sounds to me like the regular M3 would be hard-pressed to hit 170, and the CSL might hit 180 with a good tail wind. :p
