I cleaned off a c55 I have been bringing back to life. While cleaning the valve covers I noticed a crack in one of the bolt holes for the breather portion. As it’s just the breather, do I:
1. Leave it alone, full send
2. Jb weld because sealing is semi-important
3. Replace the valve covers because it is really important
It doesn't look big enough to be a problem. It's also not in a place where it could start leaking. Probably from someone over torquing the bolt.
When you put them back on, just FYI: Valve cover bolts are 10nm (88.5 in-lb), Breather covers are 4nm (35.4 in-lb) and the bolts are aluminum so they are supposed to be replaced. At 35 in-lb though I wouldn't worry about that. Don't use the aftermarket gaskets - everyone says they leak way worse then OEM.
That being said, if you've got a Puck-n-Pull type wrecking yard nearby, you could easily replace it with one from just about any M113 equipped car on the cheap.
I saw some small issues with mine and chose to paint them with Alumablast paint to keep the corrosion at bay.
