Wheel well cover material?

Wheel well cover material?
While I was checking air pressure on my new ride today, I noticed the rear wheel well coverings are carpeted material, rather than the hard, smooth plastic in the front wheel wells (like most other cars I've owned). Seems to me the carpeted material would trap dirt and moisture. Any idea why they used that type material? It was a surprise to me.

They started this on the 02+ W203s, it is to reduce noise from water i believe. It also helps keep the wheel wells looking cleaner and they simple become clean by just rinsing them with water! The smooth plastic looks nice when new but simply becomes dirty and brown looking soon after. I like the fuzzy wheel wells and wish the front had em too!
