The noise came on today again. I tried to hear where it was coming from. Its extremely loud with the hood open. It really sounds like it's coming from the pulley at the very top, right under the MB star on the silver/gray cover over the engine. It is sometimes a loud constant squeal, and some times intermittent and sounds like a bird chirping.
Anybody ever had this problem before? Maybe its the pulley? How often does that pulley go bad? Vadim mentioned that it was the upper idler pulley and sometimes squeals on cold starts. Its actally squealing now at anytime during the day, not just in the morning! Comes on sometimes, not constant. Sometimes goes away after I turn off the car and turn it back on. I don't think its the pump because the pump is located near the bottom of the bumper on the driver side?
I'm going to take it in to the dealer, but I doubt they will be able to reproduce it...as usual. Maybe I'll record it.

yeh,
i hear this sqeeking, bird chirping whatever the fu*k u want to call it sound coming from somewhere around the engine. its sounds like a bird sometimes and other times it just dies out when i dont hold the throttle down. sometimes it goes away but the 2nd i reach a certain speed it comes back and stays so i actualyl brought it into the dealer last night and the 2nd i got there the noise went away!! i shouldve known, this time i didnt turn off my car and kept it reving till a techy came out and said it is probably the pulley. so they went ahead and ordered a completely new pulley system which should be arriving by tuesday... till then im gonna be chirping all weekend.

I just got the car back from the dealer. The noise was caused by a faulty belt tensioner also known as the "free belt tighten pulley?" The pulley was frozen/noisy. They also replaced the belt because it was damaged.

Got a call from the dealer about similar problem (loud whining sound), it came from the kompressor. So they'll replace it and I should get a brand new kompressor within 3-4 days.

Finally got my car back. What first was 3-4 days turned out to be 2 weeks. But that was fine with me. They gave me a nice loaner ('06 ML500) and not to mention a free brand new supercharger along with new gaskets, this and that. But something is missing !!
