Wheel (rim) locks worth it?
MB dealer told me wheel locks are about $80 (a bit more expensive than my BMW wheel locks were at about $25 with BMWCCA discount). OK, one of my gripes is that I used to get anywhere from 15-20% discount on parts (decent savings on wheels, etc). Does MB have any such car club discount?
OK, back to wheel locks. Anyone have the MB locks? Do they unlock with regular key you carry on a keychain or is the key the type that fits into a socket? More importantly, anyone have them that think they are worth it? I guess the story goes that maybe it keeps school kids away but the pro is going to get them one way or another.
Rgds,
Norm

Anyway I talk here about steering wheel lock.
Worth it or not , really depends on what kind of place you live it and the pattern you park your car.
If your place's "school kids" are so smart that they can start your engine without a key, then I think they can also unlock any wheelock within minutes.
The purpose of any key/security device is to prolong the time that someone can break into your system/car.
How much prolonged time would be worth , that depends on where is your car parked. If you park in a crowded area, a few minutes prolonged time will definitely help as obviously the intruder will not want to draw too much attention if he has to be struggling with a wheel lock for long time.
But if you park you car at home's fixed car park, unattended,; then a few minutes prolonged time will not help that much.
A true pro will not spend more than 5-10 minutes to start a car, or else he will 'come back' at 'another time' to make sure he can start your car within that range.
The best security is a hidden switch to cut the fuel where you can get it installed by vendor. The hidden switch will prolong a long time for the intruder to find the switch.
The answer for using a wheel lock is yes if you don't mind the trouble.
A little more security is always better than none.
I don't want one because I worry it will scratch the leather on the steering wheel

even the good ones can be yanked off if someone wanted to but to make it ***** if you have some super expensive rims...i'd put on 2 sets of locks to at least make it ***** for them

Wheel locks are pieces of crap. Trust me on this, save your money and get yourself something nice.
With the proper tools (not even that proper..) they can be cracked in seconds.
Without the proper tools (a stripped key) you can be stranded in the middle of nowhere. It's a lose lose situation.
Plus who wants to steal a 200$ Mercedes rim?
