1998 C43, White over two tone
You could probably get a C280 in good shape, and pay for a set of monoblocks that most people would fall for it being a C43. But the last poster is right, they are completely different cars and the performance of the AMG is completely off the charts better. I think it is one of the cool things about the car that 90% of people out there don't realize what they are being passed by. They just assume it is a clean benz, but the car people realize you have something rare and special.
All that being said, a nice C280 would be one hell of a nice car for your first car, a far cry from my Altima.

honestly, if you are on a tight budget, pass on the AMGs. the maintenance alone can kill your pocketbook. not to mention the cost of insurance is higher as well. ANY MB is a helluva first car.

Unless you are a Geritol motorist, find the bux and go for the AMG. Having extensively driven the 280, it is a dog compared to the 36 or 43.

Here in HK, AMG C-Class dealer maintenance package is doubled than non AMG C-Class. AMG owners also tend to drive hard , thus, potentially increase frequency of parts replacement -> high maint costs. Guess AMGs drinking more fuel is not an issue if you were in USA. And, then, it is more excited when you start to mod your car.

yupe,
AlltState, Progressive, NationWide, and some other company always charge premium for AMG car over non-AMG.

Try to find one with good service history and more importantly try to find one with warranty remaining.
Whichever you decide, do some research, then test drive and decide.
But let me warn you, driving AMG is very addictive :P
