Thinkin bout C36

Im thinkin bout gettin a 95 C36 and wanted to know if there are bolt on mods that are reasonbally priced and very effective, such as Chip, ECU, Different air intakes, exhaust.....

If these modifications exist are they worth the money, because all i know with some models like the W124 e320 and 420 you cant really mod them and get much better performance out of them

Lightbulb Since you asked

My opinion, purchase a newer car, like a 2000 MB C43. It'll have the V8 with more power and torque without having to spend more money to make a C36 produce more power...you're gonna spend the cash to make the 25+/- you'll need to equal the power of a C43...plus the 2000 year model will be rarer retaining it's value better. Also, if I remember correctly the '95 year model C36 has the 4spd auto transmission. As I said from the get go...just my opinion.

Be warned, a cheap mercedes may bleed you dry in the long run, especially with an AMG. Cheap tends to equate with poorly maintained.

My thoughts exactly...cheap Benz usually means the owner "overbought' and is in over their head. Save up and get something newer...mods to any Benz are not cheap.

Let me just add, I dunno if you have followed these forums with any frequency....if either a C36 or a C43 blows a tranny...you're looking at anywhere between $3K and $4K to get it roadworthy once again. Sooooo, hopefully you have a budget or you can do these repairs yourself.

There are two different C36's i am looking at in my area one has 122k and the other has 136k which are both high mileage vehicles but i know mercedes if treated right can run for a very very long time w/out major issues.

but since i know nothing about amg what should i look for in a Amg c36 with 122, ooo miles on it. the only problem with the one im looking at is it needs new rear rotors and a wheel has a crack. but thats it .

how often and around what mileage do the trannys normally go out??
How common is this?

From what I have seen in this forum, a cracked wheel is not an easy thing to replace, you will probably end up having to buy a set for around 1k. I don't know how badly it is cracked if it could be repaired or not, that would probably cost you 250.

As far as the rotors, have the fronts been redone? Because if the rears need tob e redone, you can be assured the fronts do as well. That is probably 1000 or so to get that done, according the guy I bought mine from who had it done before i got the car.

One tip, if you find a car you really like, you can always take it to the stealership and have them do a all points inspection. IT will cost you about 200, but you will know EVERYTHING, that is wrong with the car. The seller shouldn't have any objection to this as you will be the one paying for the inspection and he/she will get a free list of known problems should you decide not to move on the car. Also gives you some bargaining room if there are items you can do (filters, etc..) on the list.

if it's the original amg wheel, i think the cracked wheel should be about 400 or so.. add about 150-200 for the tire.

modding n/a is not cheap to start with (compared to bang for buck from a induction engine), modding a merc is already expensive to start with..

And about the cracked wheel, It is a AMG monoblock II wheel which are chrome and when he said it was cracked i just assumed it was the chrome finish! but ill be takin a look at it and lettin you guys know for sure. Worse case i could just buy a new singal wheel.

I have a '96 C36 and love it to death. mine only has 80K on it and it runs perfectly. If you have the money and the opportunity, get one. They are one of the greatest naturally aspirated engines Mercedes has ever made (in my opinion). And with only about 300 sold in the us (in '96) they are extremely rare.
One problem with buying an older one is the tranny might have problems. Also, my car had a lunging problem and I had to replace the O2 censors and the throttle actuator. As others said, it is not a cheap car to maintain. Make sure you have an extra grand sitting around for repairs, you'll eventually need it (especially with high milage).

But if you can make the finances work, you can't buy a better W202 than the C36.

You can also consider the C43, which is less rare but with a V8 sounds great. Easier to find for sale, easier to talk down in price than the C36.

Good luck!
