Exhaust Issue: C43 sounds like a Mustang GT

Looking for any suggestions here. Turned off the car the other night after a short trip and it was noticeably louder than normal as I shut it off.

The car now sounds like a Mustang running without mufflers. Sounds wicked, but not something I want to live with. I'm thinking I may have blown a cat?

Car is in solid condition, 145K miles.

You may have blown out some of the steel wool baffling material inside the muffler. This stuff will typically rust out and shrivel away especially after 145k! That's the most miles I've heard of on a C43. Great job keeping her up!
A blown cat would have some pretty bad effects and would also throw a C.E.L.

Lensolo,

Thanks for the reply. No C.E.L. was thrown, and from a quick visual inspection, there is nothing out of the ordinary.

I thought it might be the cat due to the fact that the sound has a booming characteristic and seems to be coming from under the center of the car.

If it's only a muffler, I'll be very happy.

In my post, I noted 145K miles...it's actually 147.7K. Mostly highway, but still looks new and runs great!

No problem! You also might want to check for leaks.

Good luck!

I would have to guess a whole in the muffler somewhere, get it checked ASAP at a dealership before it gets worse...Great to know that a C43 is still running excellent at that kind of mileage!

theres a open campagin on the C43 exhaust system, you should look into that.

i know my cats were replaced about 8k miles ago.

Is it normal when starting a cold engine and there is a small water leak from the rear exhaust gasket? It happens in freezing temps. My dads 06 MB E350 does the same thing.
