the simple way of disabling your ASP/ESP is just unplugging the sensor, its right up front in the engine bay, very simple. Its just behind the drivers side headlight, the big metal module. Pull up on the sensor plug and it will pop out to the left. (FYI this is the same thing as "Dyno mode" for our cars)

If you want to turn it off completly, pull out the ASR/ABS fuse it the easiest option.

Mine turned off because I had a steering colmn sensor go faulty. The car was very agressive and I pressed the brakes hard coming off the motorway at 50mph and it did slide for a fair distance. Beware it will catch you out if your trying to go sideways on a street and need to slam on the brakes because a wall is coming up close.............

The ASR button is more than enough for me, I recently lost control of my car badly around a bend as it ended up doing a 180 with alot of tyre smoke but the ABS helped me to avoid the high kerb which was infront of me. I think it stepped out when it change gear, I had the stereo on loud which doesn't help to hear what the car is doing. ( I just read what I have written......... I sound crazy, I am a bit so thats why I HAVE NOT COMPLETELY turned off the ASR safety features on my car)

Have fun but stay safe....................

I agree, just put ASR in "off" mode aka low mode, low mode still allows plenty of fun without making an *** out of yourself or getting hurt.

You have to understand, the traction control and braking system are one system. It is impossible to disable one with out the other b/c both are directly incorporated into the same unit so theres no way to just disable one (unless you know have to hack the MB software code, which as of yet has not been done to my knowledge). Just don't disable it, The only time you should pulley out the plug is when you want to dyno your W202. Other then that, leave it on or in "low" position.

or if you know why you are doing it...

a highly modified car will induce enough wheelspin in "off" that it will trigger the system. If you were injecting nitrous when that happened you would go BOOM (as we've discussed in other threads)... the system also works poorly even with my car as it seems that when it let's the power come back on (after shutting it down due to wheelspin) that it is surprised by the available tq and starts a bit of a vicious cycle between off and on- not something that is ideal.

of course the reason's i'm listing are VERY VERY different than just wanting to deliberately slide the car sideways-

well now i can disable the ASR. by pulling the ABS computer plug, but when i unplug it my ASR and ABS light comes on and i don't have ABS no more.
i just go ahead and drive it like this with ASR on. i just hated the differential, this 95 c36's differential is NOT good at all!!!!

Kinhais,

You have to understand the C36 AMG has an open diff, infact all benz/AMGs do except the 65s and now the new performance package cars.

Yes of course your warning lights come on and you don't have ABS thats EXACTLY WHAT I SAID. Thats why I did NOT recommend it, you only do that during dyno.

If you REALLY want to solve the problem, get a set of REALLY grippy 255's out back (or 265s if you can squeeze them) and be happy. That alone will solve most of your problems. The real problem is not ABS, its tires/grip.

If you have grippy enough tires then technically the ESP will never kick in b/c it won't detect slip. If you want to eliminate traction controls interference, upgrade rear rubber (something like Kuhmo MX 255+ or Dunlap Direzza Z1 255+) and it will be MUCH MUCH better. Albeit you will probably have traction problems resurface if you get the AMS crank pulley simply b/c it produces so much torque on the low end (especially in cold weather). But thats another issue all together I suppose.

Upgrade rubber, run ESP/ASR in "Low" mode and you should have no problems. enjoy

Bringing this post back from the dead. Just snapped the drivers side half shaft taking off from a light. The asr was starting to kick in when I heard a loud thud and lost power. I'm assuming asr does apply brakes to "control" wheel spin ?

It must have been a pretty heavy footed take off from a light

No, ASR will reduce torque only. Single wheel braking is managed by ESP.

An back to old Topic: If you want to deactivate ASR, you Need to stop the car and then press ESP OFF button. When you press during driving it Switch off ESP but not ASR (it is strange but it was my experience).

Weird.. just rusty half shafts then. I thought the flex discs would be the weakest link but guess not.. I will be experimenting with pulling the fuse in the summer. If F1 doesnt need driver aids then neither do I..

Haven't enough C36's and C43's died untimely deaths at the hands of wreckless drivers!? Just last month Remolexi's one-of-a-kind navy blue C36 5 speed was wrapped around a tree on dry roads!

Really wish the mods would delete this thread :P

Heh. I've driven plenty of cars without drivers aids, I have fond memories of my dads 930 and trying to keep that thing from biting back. I'm not planning on killing the c36 any time soon but I also dont buy and tinker with cars to just admire them.

Hi there,

I have a C36 here in Australia.
I took my C36 down to a track day with the ASR and Traction control still on because it can't be turned off... I ended up with some ruined breaks as a result. (Cue insults about my driving thanks.)

Tried this and pulled the sensor plug, this did turn off the asr abs however now when I put my foot down it won't change from 2nd to 3rd... I assume this is a safely feature from the management system. Is there a way around this?

You guys are too nice to be telling him how to turn of the Asr. If you want to drift get a 240 nissan and put some drift tires there you go. I learned my lesson I will never disrespect an Amg anymore haha. One night I was a little too happy. I took my car in the park and started doing donuts and drifting around a tree for a good 20 minutes or so, after that I noticed the steering wheel locking up on me. I drove home right away. Poped the hood and noticed my steering pump leaking. And my radiator house cut up. I Guess the power steering pump rubbed against the hose and tore inside it. Thank god I did the work my self but all that damage could of cost me 1k. Trust me an amg has a personality if you disrespect it. These cars will bite you in the *** haha.

Just wait until my Ultima Sports Can-Am is finished... 1100kg weight fully loaded, over 500hp and no driver aids no power steering, no ABS, no traction control, just your butt and head to keep thinks in control. Not forgetting some big ***** to dare drive at the limit. That will never happen on the public road, but on a track, well why not....
