it's possible. the airbag warning light will definitely came on.
btw, are you gonna get 5-point racing seatbelt and racing seats? because without the airbag, the standard 3 point won't do you any good. Just asking

The steering wheel may be a bit harder for someone like me to remove but easy for a professional. I got my original c36 wheel replaced with an E55 AMG wheel. My install guy charged me $10 bucks as a courtesy b/c he does lots of work for me.
Here are the steps I observed:
1. Disconnect battery
2. remove airbag (center part with MB logo) from wheel by unscrewing 2 little screws on the back left & right side of the wheel.
3. Mark & note airbag wires and remember which wire plugs onto which airbag electrical prong.
4. Unscrew large center hex nut from wheel's center (exposed when airbag unit is removed. This is the hard part b/c the nut is really tight. My install guy had to work it a couple of times eventhough he had an pneumatic tool.
5. pull off old & install new, taking into consideration the original position the old wheel came out from.
5. connect correct wires to appropriate airbag prongs, screw back airbag module, and reconnect battery.
Voila!

Hey thanks for the input. What is the difference with the E55 steering wheel? Is it smaller? So to repalce it with MOMO wheel, the airbag will be on full time? there is no way to prevent this?

I'm not familiar with the Momo airbag. Maybe someone who has 1 can help u with that.
Changing to the e55 wheel is purely for looks. The wheel size has the same diameter. The difference is that the e55 wheel has 2 humps on the upper left and right inner side of thw wheel to give it a sportier look. The center (airbag cover) also has "AMG" written on it which the 96 steering wheel didn't. 2 tone just like my original c36 wheel.

I don't remember any Momo steering whl has airbag other than the one that's used for WRX and EVO VII/VIII
the 99 E55 has the same steering wheel as the 98 and 99 C43, I believe.

where can i find a E55 steering wheel? how much do they usually cost? any chance on getting a used one? so, if I remove the steering wheel in place of a momo with no airbag, it will not work?
