Back to the original poster's question, I actually came accross some old literature on the C36 on it's debut that could answer the question of how you ended up with the single piston caliper. In the article it states that the cars destined to be C36's started out as C280's and were shipped to AMG "nearly" complete. This was less the bumpers AND E420 brakes. According to the online parts catalog at Autohaus AZ the 1996 E300D shares the rotor that is currently on your car. Perhaps your car "slipped" by and the brakes weren't swapped out as they were supposed to be.....just a thought.

thx, tried digging thru old mag articles myself.. that does sound awfully familiar, but can't seem to find it. oh well. i suppose it's not soo bad.. cheaper rotors/pads that last 30k miles
. just hope nothing else is is missing from some "slip" hahaha

The article was from AutoWeek December 1994. Since you are in SF you are more than welcome to stop by. In anycase getting the "proper" calipers and rotors installed shouldn't be overly difficult...pads and rotors are relatively inexpensive, all you really need to find are the calipers.

fwiw, the later C36's didn't get vented rotors like the 400E/E420 had. Mine are solid in back, the standard solid rotor used on almost all MB's up through current production.
