Sun roof slider

So the slider (the thing that you can slide to cover the sunroof) on my sunroof is WAY loose and if I take off real fast or if I come to a hard stop the slider will slam open/shut. This is VERY annoying and the only way I can prevent this from happening is to have my sun roof open. When I open the sun roof there is something that holds the slider back. Does anyone else have this problem??? Does anyone know of a fix?

Anbody think of putting something in the runners which could brake the "slider". A bit of felt/carpet/foam or something like that?

You don't want to put anything on the runners because it won't slide back properly if you want to open your sunroof. I'll see what can be done since i need to remove the sunroof panel to re-glue it or reupholster it. I always take the macgyver approach when it comes to fixing my cars.

I am open to all suggestions, Macgyver or MB either way works for me as long as the fix or MOD works.

Sorry to say, well it looks like it
Mine slides perfect (for the moment): sufficient resistance to avoid it flapping forward or backward by itself under braking or accelerating

Does anyone know what causes it to have sufficient resistance? I can only assume this would be the part that I need to replace.

Well, mine doesn't do that anymore after the reupholstery. You need to remove the felt that's on the sides or replace it with something with more resistance.

so how do you remove the slider??? I tried like the video I posted but it doesn't seem to be the same. I removed the plastic trim and opened the sun roof half way, there are 2 plastic strips than run down the sides of the slider, I unclip the strips in the front and still can't get the slider out. Do they clip in the rear as well??

Have you tried removing the sun roof completely like in the video? This should get you to the sun slider, no?

LOL..... I have done more than enough on my C43 the hard way, I am looking for the easy solution. It seems YNVDIZW124 knows how to do it. If nobody can help me out then I guess I will have to morph into Macguiver benz tech extraordinaire and whip out the white coat. If that is the case I will definitely post pics of the whole process to aid the next guy who wants to remove the sunroof shade.

So after an exhausting search of the internet with no luck the white lab coat had to come out and I was once again transformed into Macgyver benz tech extraordinaire so I could tackle the sunroof shade issue, here is what I did:

1.) you need to remove the black plastic trim piece at the front of the sunroof, I did this by prying on it with a flat head screw driver. Once again it will feel like you are going to break it (and you might if you pry too hard) but it will come off.
Sun roof slider-sunroof-shade-5.jpg

2.) you need to remove the black accordion looking rubber pieces on both sides.
Sun roof slider-sunroof-shade-1.jpg

You need to start in the rear by pulling the rubber plug out of the hole (seen in the far left of the picture, hard to see I know but these pics are taken with my Iphone ), this plug is shaped the same as the hole but it is twisted (hard to explain but when you do it you will understand) you should twist and pull to get it out but you can just pull but BE CAREFUL
Sun roof slider-sunroof-shade-2.jpg

then pull along the top of the rubber piece as it is wedged between the sunroof and the rail. The rubber piece will drop but will still be connected, to fully remove it you need to pull on the metal piece that the rubber is connected to. Start at the rear and pull towards you, once the back unclips you will need to pull the metal piece to the rear of the car to unclip the front of the metal piece.

This process is the same for both sides and once you do this you should be able to fully remove the accordion looking rubber pieces.

3.) open your sunroof all the way and slide the sunshade all the way forward. Lift the sunshade up and out of the sunroof hole.
Sun roof slider-sunroof-shade-6.jpg
BOOOOOOM sunroof shade is now removed!!!!

I inspected the sunroof system fully and it appears to me that the sunroof shade is held either open or closed by a felt looking piece (seen in the last pic, it is the black piece located in the middle at the front of the sunroof shade). I think the felt piece wedges between the sunroof shade and black plastic trim piece you took off in step 1 to keep it closed and against another felt looking piece that is on the sunroof itself to keep it open. The only thing I cant figure out is what would keep the sunroof shade open if I had the sunroof popped up as the felt piece would be out of contact with the felt piece on the sunroof shade but really I could deal with that.

If indeed this piece is felt it would explain a lot as the piece that is on my sunroof shade looks like the "hairy" part that attaches to velcro and the piece on my sunroof looks like felt or something like it. At first I was thinking it was supposed to be velcro but upon further inspection it wouldn't make sense as it has nothing to attach to and I would think that it would scratch\damage the plastic trim piece (I could be wrong).

To reinstall it is the reverse of the above instructions, I suggest you put the knobby looking thing on the black accordion looking rubber piece back in the hole from the outside of the vehicle. I found it easiest to pop the sunroof up and do it through the crack.

I am going to look for some material (most likely felt) to replace the worn material I have and see if that works. I will keep you guys posted. If any of you guys have a solution please let me know.

If you guys have any questions just ask.....
I make this stuff too easy for you guys..... Soon I will be a driveway certified MB tech

Great man, you did it! Congratulations

I wrote that it could have been a felt thing that needed to be stuck in (see post #5 ). Looks like it is worn out and needs replacementor updating.

I glued an extra piece of cloth on top of the worn out felt piece and it seems to work great. When I have the sunroof shade fully closed it takes a little bit of force to get it to slide back, not a lot but definitely enough that I think it will stay shut during hard acceleration\stops. I will keep you guys posted but it seems to me this is the cheap and fast answer I was looking for.

I may try to fix mine now that your provided the great instructions.

Did you have any rattle noises before and did this work fix that?

SORRY! I was gone all weekend. Great write up

All you need to do is to remove the plastic on the front, push the accordion piece up on each side and slide it out. You'll need a long flat screwdriver or a flat piece of metal to wedge it in between.

The reason you can't get it out easily is because there is a plastic piece on each side of the sun roof slide that it gets stuck on.

I did have a rattle before when the sunroof shade was opened fully. I have yet to hear the rattle but I will keep you posted.
