High Performance Tranny build from CLK55 thread

However, $4k+ is ridiculously expensive even for performance rebuild. You really shouldn't be spending more than $2500 for a performance rebuild.
Its not that difficult, all you have to do is run thicker iron discs in the clutch packs to decrease the amount of slack (usually stock tranny has like 8-10mm of slack per clutch pack, you can bring it down to about 2-3mm of slack). The stock clutch discs exhibited zero wear after 50k, and when setup properly are easily capable of taking 600HP+ easy (some estimates say up to 800 on stock clutch discs). When the tranny fails its almost always one of the rubber seals or gaskets (its always the parts that only cost a few $ that mess up the most expensive components... annoying)
The ECU will also adapt over the first 2000 miles you drive it and continually improve shift time & performance as it adapts to the new parameters. Using manu-matic also is greatly improved w/ performance tranny as well. With a stage 3 setup (or higher) there's so much torque down low that the ECU learns & adjusts and actually behaves almost exactly like a true sequential. You can go WOT as early as 2250rpm without downshifting and it will hold it till redline.
I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks
