The car I just picked up and is currently parked outside my hotel room, had the fluid changed at 104k miles and is now sitting at 122k and will soon need it again. Shifts like a dream and OMG its ez to speed in this car!

P.s. All else fails and lets find you a good E55 tranny! That will make for a great upgrade for when you drop in a new E55 motor later down the line because every C43 owner should do this once the 4.3 bites it!!!
Don't shoot...NO I never did this yet. I bought it at 112K and its at 135K.
Maybe I misunderstood what Moneyone had advised but I will ask him again to be clear.

I know it is the tranny now, but think its moreso from a loss of ATF. I looked for a leak as advised and it was there. I poured a little in the dipstick and a new puddle formed overnight. This leak must be a sudden thing as i never noticed it.

The car the next day did go into R and after turning it off it drove another 1/4 mile or so. A Quasi limp mode. I had to try and drive it away from where it was in Baltimore. I feared vultures would come overnight.

I had it towed and I will see what the DR Moneyone diagnosis tomorrow and take it from there.

As far as what I would want for it if? Hell I am really trying to keep it. I had 2 rentals so far and OMG does it suck driving other cars. A 2011 KIA SUV really? What a POS.

I do thank you all for the insight on this so far. I hope its in the cards to keep her.

Great! I really hope you get to keep it! I surely don't want to loose a W202 C43 over a little issue like this! Good luck and keep us posted!

I just had the pilot bushing replaced, under warranty, as it started leaking again. Big puddle under car. Had the trans serviced 4000 miles ago. That included fluid/filter change and replacement of leaking pilot bushing. Trans svc ran about $450 from my local independent MB shop.

My C36 had shifting issues due to low fluid. It also had a leaking pilot bushing.

Its been a while but I thought I'd update.

I am awaiting feedback at this point but I found a E55 (7226xx) transmission with 20K miles on it. Unfortunately I have cashed out my kids college fund to make things happen. Sucks bad but, Dad does need a car and the 2010 honda civic rental makes me miss the 43 already.

If I do this I am lifer 202 man. Maybe it'll grow up to be a C55 someday.

Sorry to hear you had to do that, pay it back with interest! you will be very happy with the e55 tranny if everything is in order with the unit! Your just one step closer to owning a true C55 beast! Keep it for life! Maybe you will be sick of it when they are worth 20k again!

It will be with interest. My hope is that I still have time to get it back in their and yes- add more. A C55 would be so cool. Just hearing Moneyone's start up was enough convincing for me..My kids jumped scared

I am pretty sure they used the same tranny in the C43 and E55, they have the same ratio's if I am not mistaken.

OK I ned some tech help on this. The E55 transmission for sale does not have 7226.31 on the side. Its some other #.

SOme yards don't have them listed by 7226 tec. Is there a specific year that the E55 is CONFIRMED to work with the 43? I don't want to buy something I can't use with my car. Is it safe if it begins with 7226....and the rest different? I really want the 55 vs 43 trans to avoid this debacle.

I think the E55 had a 722.609 and the C43 had the 722.631 but as far as I know the ratios are the same and they both used the EGS51 so I dont know what the difference between the 2 models would be. Your best bet would be to get the same year E55 transmission as your C43 I would imagine.

Looks like I might of been wrong about the E55 tranny. It appears the E55 had the 722.636 (used in the E55 and CLK55) not the 722.609 but I do believe the gear ratios were the same as our 722.631. I found this link, not sure how accurate it is....

Thanks 503C43 ////AMG . I have been looking for that list. I stumbled on it and forgot to save the page.

I see member PJMAK stated he bought his 98 C43 that was a MB Tech's. It has a 2001 E55 in it. I am trying to get confirmation from him on the numbers and if its that year. I am willing to shell out $ and moneyone is willing to try.

Question: To the guys that have done C55 conversions...did they leave the 722.631 C43 trans in it to die a painful death?

Yea my tranny is out of a 2001 E55. Not sure about the number but I had the car for over 40k, no tranny service ever done on it after I bought it and still shifts like a dream(knock on wood)

tranny had between 60 and 70k when it was installed in my car...

E55 transmission

According to Wiki (not the leaking one ):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_W210
1999 E55 Transmission
  • 5 and 6 speed (optional) auto 722.6 (same as C43, E55, SL/S600/c). Now what is this 6 speed optional they take about??
  • Final drive ratio 2.82
  • 1st gear 3.59
  • 2nd gear 2.19
  • 3rd gear 1.41
  • 4th gear 1.00
  • 5th gear 0.83
  • 6th gear 0.92
  • Reverse gear 3.16

I am pretty sure there is a 6 speed manual that was used in the 2000 estate model. It was equipped with a G56 6-speed manual transmission

Some differences have been reported between the 1998-99 and the 2000 version such as the ECU software on the 2000 version that seems to provide better gearbox performances and longer life to the gearbox. I would assume this applies to anything after 2000.

If you were closer I'd say host a transmission pull party. A bunch of beer and pizza and bring everyone over to rip that sucker out.

Thanks man. If it were summer I may have given her a try. I have access to a full stocked garage, tools, lifts etc.

Its is in good hands now. I ordered a 01 E55 with 20k miles on it. Arriving Monday for rescue by Moneyone. It'll be nice to have running by next weekend. How much for the 55 engine??? Another "want" to add to my collection. Its getting suicide doors and engine swap if I ever hit lottery.

You can find a good 5.4 for around 4 or 5k! Not a bad price to what your getting. I am glad everyone got this E55 tranny confusion sorted while I was out! The 1999 E55 tranny was that only year they didn't offer the tip style shifting. For some reason our r129 SL modded trannys don't fair very well but the E55 trannys seem to do just fine. I know a few guys get lucky and even keep the C43 tranny when swapping into a 5.4 and never have any issues with reg oil changes. GOOD LUCK!
