Weird noise

When I turn right, I hear a distinct whirring noise from the front of my C240T. This week-end my 43 has started doing the same noise The noise is not constant. Sometimes it there, other times nothing to hear It also makes some of the same noise when driving in a straight line when the car(s) is cold after sitting around several days. The MB dealer has not been able to identify the problem. The wheel bearings have been checked and are all OK. This is getting me worried as both my cars now have the same illness
Any ideas??

Hmmm, I have thought of that. Will have to investigate and try turning the power steering to the right when not moving.

After reading some of MarcusF's excellent tech descriptions, I wonder if this could be the cause of the noise... http://www.marcusfitzhugh.com/CLK/DIY/sgb.html

Idler Pulley replacement time? See if its loose.

Youtube has some great folks who took the time to record noises and diagnosis.

Ahm, no not yet but will check the torque of the holding bolts and see if any other issue. No leaks as far as I can see, but will check oil level. Is there anything special (instructions or what to look for) in doing this??

do you only hear the noiz in tight space/corners when you wanna take off of a tight space and you have to work your steering wheel from left 2 rite from stand still @ a tight and narrow parking space?
I have sometimes a noiz from the steering system and thats a normal operating noiz procedure.

My power steering pump went bad and there were no signs of a leak or broken parts... I started hearing a "whirring" noise when I would turn, it eventually got worse and worse until as soon as I turned the wheel the noise was audible from a distance.

Have also thought of a dragging caliper because I noticed that the noise would be greatly reduced or even disappear when pressing the brake pedal. Will have to get the wheel off and look around the brakes.

Take a good, long look at the pad wear on that wheel and compare to other side.

If the hose is deteriorating and starting to constrict the caliper will drag. Never seen it firsthand on a mercedes but on Porsche you change hoses every 10 years to prevent this.

I will look closely too and probably will go ahead and install the Goodridge stainless braided hoses I have in reserve for the C43. Probably get some also for the C240T at the same time

did you fix your PS whirring problem?
what was the culprit?

i foggot the procedure to check PS oil level?
i never check the oil level on PS

should i check PS oil level while engine is running or shut off being dead cold?

if i remember correct there are 2 reading scales for oil level, hot vs cold

The culprit was the idler belt pulley and not the PS pump. Yes there is a small dip stick attached to the reservoir cap with 2 marks for hot or cold measurement
I no longer have the c240 wagon since some time back
It suffered the typical nasty metal cancer that makes nice holes everywhere....

you refer to top idler pulley with the long bolt hitting radiator when removed?

you foggot to tell me how to read the dipsh*t?
when engine is cold or when engine is running?

you read engine olio level when olio is down the olio pan with engine shut off, maybe it's the opposite with PS olio, what is proper reading for PS olio level when engine is hot but off or cold but off?
I'm going to check it tomorrow

You remind me about that foolish (M8x139) long bolt..,

last year, i made a new (1.25) pitch thread on the water pump hole, then use shorter (M8x35) Hollow bolt,,

now, can remove the bolt without even touching the fan blade..

I think MB guys made it that long as a part of holds the pulley with water pump to the timing case..,,

also, it's kinda smart move for $$$$$$ labor..
