Wheel and Shifter Knob Repainted (DIY with Pics)

Hey guys so I wanted to share my experience painting the white (technically, silver ) portions of my steering wheel and shifter knob.

Supplies:
  • (1) 1fl oz of white acrylic leather paint (Angelus brand, found on eBay for ~$3.50/bottle). I bought 2 bottles of white, 1 of black, thinking of mixing them to color match, but decided to stick with just white for simplicity. Note: I didn't even use a whole 1fl oz bottle
  • Masking tape, newspaper (prep material to catch paint drip)
  • Leather cleaner (I used Armor All interior cleaner; worked well enough)
  • Brush (I used a small foam brush)
Prep:
  • Clean the surfaces to be painted with the cleaner first, followed by a good wipe down with warm water on a clean towel (microfiber works best). Let it dry.
  • Do the usual prep work with masking tape, newspaper, etc that'd you usually prep with.
Note: I was told by a fellow member on Benzworld about lightly sanding the wheel first. I tried that but realized it was doing more harm than good (tearing up the leather--think of dry, flaky skin). Thankfully, I noticed and stopped quickly and the damage could be covered by a few layers of paint. I'd advise not to do this.

Painting:
  • 4 coats is what I used; 5th if you are extra hard on your surfaces would probably work.
  • Wait 30-60 minutes between coats; it will be dry to the touch within 10 minutes, but don't slap on another coat just yet
  • Ideal temp to paint in: between 40F to 80F. The colder it is, the longer it takes to dry and vice versa (obviously). Don't paint any colder or the paint will crack and whatnot.
  • You'll get some air bubbles, but they'll work themselves out (property of acrylic paint), use the brush to help smooth it out if you want.
  • Let it stand overnight before you use the pieces.

Thanks!

Yeah I was debating painting, redying, or getting new leather. Having no experience with dying, I didn't want to experiment with my wheel. Getting the wheel reupholstered professionally is costing my friend about $225 for his C43 wheel. Paint is the cheapest option; and it looks as good as my friend's wheel.

$225 for a steering wheel? You were right to do it yourself. If anyone can (and just about anyone can) they should do it themselves. I've done seats, wheels and panels countless times over the past 15 years or so. $225 would be enough materials to do many full interiors. Here's a page that discusses how I do seats that are in horrific condition. The better they start off, the less prep is required.
