1997 C36 Head gasket question
Simple question for any MB techs or other members who had to replace a head gasket on a c36.. How much would this repair cost to have it done by a mechanic (on average)?
Thanks the help!

I'd depends, is the oil seeping from the front left of the block only and NOT mixing with the coolant or vice versa?
Or is it mixing?
If it ain't mixing and just seeping on the usual spots then you are fine to just remove the head and replace the head gasket and assemble, that's it, ASLONG as you know the engine hasn't been over heated that is.
If it actually is mixing and it did overheat I would do a complete head gasket job.
The first one is the least expensive I would say $500-1000,
The second would be more $1,200-$2,000 depending if you want to replace other wear items when you are in the engine at the same time. Good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks for your reply! The leak is small and coming from the back of the block and apparently mixing with the coolant. But the owner of the car said the car has never been overheated and the problem was caught early on, as he keeps a keen eye on the car. Therefore, I am getting a mechanic to change the head gasket and flush the coolant system to hopefully thwart the problem. Any other recommendations for me to mention to my mechanic before the car goes in the shop?
Thanks a ton for the help!

Okay yes so if you see oil In the coolant the head gasket is probably gone, just inspect everything once it's apart and replace as necessary like hoses, the timing chain and guides, and make sure you use the proper "updated gasket from Mercedes SPECIFC to the C36 AMG only, and make sure you do a proper head resurfacing aswell and seal it all up nice and tight with Mercedes sealant, don't go cheap and she will last you a very long time with many fun miles. Good luck and keep us updated!
