The Other Projects...

So we know that DRB is working on an Ultima Can-Am (which I follow closely on Facebook). Any one else have any interesting projects (not C36/43 related)?

I'm in crunch time with some guys from work trying to get our ChumpCar race car together in time for a race at Charlotte Motor Speedway at the end of June. Here is a pic of the cage in progress. Moving onto the door bars next to finish that up, but still have a lot of electrical stuff to work out. I'll post up some pics once it gets done and the paint and decals are done (probably the night before the race based on the pace we're at).

My buddy and I are talking about putting together a chumpcar, looks like real fun! We are thinking about taking the penalty laps and getting something that's worth more than $500. Like a clapped out IROC-Z and dropping a big block in it. We don't really care about winning races, we just want to blow the doors of people in the straights

Have you raced in the chumpcar series before?

Great to here that others also have projects in the works apart from working on our 36's or 43's

eclectic assortment of cars
My buddy has an EK Civic, fairly stripped out now. Will sit on Buddy Club P1s. He's still contemplating the motor - B16 swap was ready to go in but the motor turned out to be in poor shape. I'm trying to encourage him to just go whole hog and go with a K20 setup from a CSX Type-S - with 6 speed LSD.

I'm going to look at some AP2 bumpers for my S2000 tomorrow, and then I think I'll be done with that car, save for a replica AP2 front lip. Just put hood dampers on the car a couple weeks ago, I wonder how I did without them all this time!

Just put AP2 headlights and tail lights on it too.

Contemplating a Eurocharged ECU tune for my W203 C55, and then maybe their trans tune as well - have heard great things. Have to get through a bunch of maintenance stuff first - front pads and rotors, plugs, wires, plus stainless lines at all four corners. Then maybe a set of Forgestar F14s.

Then I think I will stop with the car, nothing else for mods....as it will be time to start saving for either a C63 (my dentist has promised me 'right of first refusal' to his MY11, black on black, performance package) or a 997 C2S. My wife would have other ideas, and I probably should put money into our house to help pay down the mortgage....basement needs new floors too...garage needs a new door...but you can't drive your house....

If I get a C63, then the C55 should go. But if I get a 997, then the S2000 should go. I flip flop on the subject nearly daily. The past week I have been trending towards a 997. Next week I'll be back on the C63 bandwagon. Point is all moot though until I have some more money in my jeans though!

I have so many other projects that I simply cannot afford to even begin. Fully restore a 67 thru 69 Dodge Dart with a built 340, efi, modernized suspension. Drop an ls1 or 354 hemi into a gutted w202 with a 6 speed. C36 engine into a getrag w201. Lite turbo or drop a C36 engine into my wife's beautiful 94 E320. Fully restore my 1980 240d...

Wouldn't know which one to do if I even had the money.

No, this will be the first race for any of us. Some have track day experience, but first door to door for everyone.

The one thing I would forewarn anyone about when it comes to Chump, don't let the $500 number fool you. We have a few pennies under 7 grand into our car. Then you add in $500 to $600 per person for the minimum safety gear and it becomes an expensive hobby. I think if we would have known the actual cost at the beginning, we might have reconsidered, but we were too far in when we figured it out. We do have some pretty trick stuff though, like forged BBS wheels off of an Evo MR that weigh a hair over 17 lbs, a SPAL fan off of a big diesel Zero Turn mower (we're all engineers at Husqvarna), brakes from a Z32 Twin Turbo, etc. All within the rules, but we wanted to gain advantages where they could be had.

Worked on the cage some more tonight. I'm on my third spool of welding wire and second tank of gas on doing this cage. It is A LOT of welding. Got the door bars in on the passenger side last night and driver side tonight. The other guys worked on X tubes for the rear support bars.

We're not the best at keeping up the blog, but you can follow our build a bit here: http://zip6racing.blogspot.com/

Cool blog! Looks like you have your work cutout for you if you plan on making the June 22 race.

Tough choice there, but I think you have a lot more sweat equity in the S2k, so I would tend to keep that. But having two 2-doors would be a bit impractical. If it makes you feel any better, my parents' garage is a 911, M3, and 350Z. Of course they have no kids at home.

We got the car down off of the jack stands today. This is our first time having it on the ground with the wheel spacers installed and luckily my math was good the wheels fit great. The cage is almost done and tomorrow the T-Top close out panels will go on. I will be diving back in to the electrical system shortly (I gutted the harnesses, we probably have about 10-15% of the original harness still in the car) to get the gauges working correctly and get the kill switch installed. Also wiring in some accessory circuits for things like the Cool Suit system. I killed my third spool of weld wire tonight, so I'll be picking up a 10 pound spool tomorrow to last me a bit longer.

Got some training in the other day on the Husqvarna Proving Grounds

Also, the car is all primered up and ready for the new 'race car' look. We'll be revealing the final look on Friday.
