How long on average do you let your car warm up in the morning? I usually wait until it comes off high idle then go...

this topic has been beaten to death and such :p Most people I think let the fast idle drop below 1000 RPM's then slowly drive for the first few minutes to warm up the cat coverter and engine. Driving it is the best way to warm up a car, so let the RPM needle drop then slowly drive, no pushing it hard (beyond 3k RPM's) for like 5-10 min, watch your temp guage. When it's about 80 or around there, u'r good to go.

oh, btw, letting your engine just sit there and warm up does more harm then driving it to warm it up.

differs in philosophy and in culture... i may have missed the previous discussions... but if i remember correctly...on dw tv's autonews, japanese makes usually tell customers to idle at slightly elevated rpm to warm up the car... while german engineers say it is best to warm up the car with the car rolling, using a light foot. preferably with a slight uphill, so the engine temp can be raised quickly...

I don't know if its just benz, but most if not all benzes have "fast idle" where it idles above 1000 rpm's for about 20-30 seconds (i guess depend on weather, hot or cold) so that it warms it up some, but probably best way to warm up is to drive it lightly for a few minutes as it already kept a higher RPM for you when you first started.Originally posted by steve s

it's not just benz...sometimes my volvo and definitely most honda's i've driven does that. but what is different in the c36 is the way it stays in either 1st gear or 2nd gear when it's cold and just started... it'll hold rpm a little higher than usual and sometimes won't even shift as it tries to warm up...

no no, i'm not talking about the cat coverter and the shift holdin' longer...if you start up your car, you'll notice that it "fast idles" above 1000 RPM's...
what i meant was that you don't have to let it idle in the driveway for like 5 minutes b4 going...because it has already idled higher for you then dropped the RPM letting you know that it's "safe" to drive off.
