driving me crazy (steering wobble)
guys ive replaced just about everything... bearings, rotors, control arms, idler arm bushing, ball joints, alignment at the dealer, road force balanced my tires too....inspected by numerous places including mercedes and all say suspension is perfect... yet im getting a bad shake in steering when approaching 60mph and usually stays that way till about 75-80.. ive seen a few posts about drive shafts being the culprit and with allmost 200,000k i would just like some ones opinion ihey have gone through the same trouble or if anyone knows a resolution? im thinking of buying a rebuilt driveshaft from a distributor in tx... supposedly they take my old one and send out a new one ready to bolt in for 395? please help guys...

Have you checked the steering shock absorber as I don't seem to see that on the things done to your vehicle? That part is a wear item. Worth checking and very cheap to change.
I'm 99% sure your problem is not from the drive shaft. If it was you would get a shake in the body not the steering

The 202 and 208 suspensions are virtually identical. My "shimmy" disappeared when I replaced my lower control arm bushings with poly. Hope you find the fix!

its very rare but I have seen flat spotted front tires due to long cold storage periods, the few that I have seen where v and z rated hi perf tires and of coarse the wheels should be checked as marcusf indicated, these two possible culprits will show up on a hi speed balancing machine if a tire tech is looking for it, tie rods? my experiences with drive shafts u joints flex discs separated rear tires , bent wheels and rear suspension problems most always are felt thru the seat ,recent years an 03 s55 and c43 amg s came my way, learning valuable leesons concerning them,i please keep us informed when the problem is cured

man you guys are awesome on this forum..the best i have been on and i really appreciate you guys quick responses...as far as balance goes, it was done at mercedes and they checked the wheels and just told me my tires are all seasons that seem to ride a lot stiffer, but they used the hunter balance machine and never mentioned wheels bent or anything.. tie rods are good and tire pressure is (if im not mistaken 35 all around?) cant remember but there set to mb spec from the dealer when they balanced... i ordered a new mb original center support and bearing for the driveshaft and im hoping thats the culprit.. but well find out here next week when they come in... if not im going with new tires but im farely certain that even with harder tires it shouldnt shake like it does.. plus i realized the vibration is starting in the 45+ speeds and stops at roughly 75... my tires are yokahoma envigors with a lot of tread left fyi... anyone ever changed the whole center drag link? from dealers recomendation everythings good but could that tighten some things up? sorry so many questions but i want to keep this car for good and would like to for once really enjoy a smooth ride!

are your rim widths and tire sizes all the same on all 4 corners if so you can rotate them front to rear and rear to front and then if your vibration is felt thru the seat u will then know its was the tires,if u have staggered tire sizes and rims you can not rotate them,mb recommends 33psi front and 41 psi rear for summer tire pressure , keep us posted

yeah there staggered haha that reminds me.. i took it to meineke the first week i got it(never again)just to get a balance and the guy rotated them as well.. i came back to get my car and was like wtf why are my tires so wide in the front... the jackass didnt even pay attention and rotated them with the largers up front... after that i went somehwere else and had it balanced again.. i mean how good can u balance if you cant even tell the diffrence on staggred wheels

seems that slipped right past the tech and the manager,i think we have similar problems,my left upper control arm / ball joint is defective, but what really surprised and cured most of my steering wheel vibration was the motor mounts, left side completely gone shot ,right side not too far gone but I did them both, what an improvement ,so next is upper control arms then tires,i just have a slight vibration between 55and 60 mph,its been a long and frustrating road with c43 as it was abused before I got it,keep up posted I look forward to solutions regarding our c43 s

Motor mounts, whole drag link, upper bushings go bad (replace arms unfortunately), lower bushings with sturdier POLy or CLK bushings, and or re torque/ re adjusting gear box too. But I suspect motor mounts/ drag link a whole. Follow up and what happens.

Exact. Same. Problem on mine. Was told it was likely an alignment. Had it aligned. Was told it was an unbalanced tire. Had it balanced. Bought 4 NEW tires, even. Was told it was a warped rim. Had all 4 rims straightened and refinished. STILL SAME ISSUE! Exact same issue as OP: steering wheel shake at 55-59mph, then it kinda dies from 60-62, comes back a little weaker at 63-75mph. I AM GOING TO LOSE MY MIND.

Dude sorry to hear that. Have the gear box re adjusted. Remember wear on these car after 100k will need a nice suspension redo in the near future, if not already. And where did you do your wheel alignment.

i appreciate all you guys input, im having my upper control arms and lower ball joints replaced tomorrow and i will follow up on here with the results... sulaco its ridiculous how many places say "alignment and balance" and how much i have spent to try and cure this damn shake but have your upper control arms checked again im almost positive its the culprit...does your steering feel kind of loose now and if you back up over a bump slowly do you hear/feel a clunk when your front goes over it? i mentioned it many times and until i specifically acted like i knew what i was talking about and told them i had play then they realised it was there.... hopefully there not just going along with what i asked for but well see.... motor mounts? lol i allready changed them but they would have nothing to do with a steering "wobble" persay but more of a vibration in the cabin... i have contemplated the drag link but that will be my last step if not cured after this.... and if that fails.... im buying a fn kia lol

Hi everyone, after resetting my wheel balance 2 months ago, wobble was gone. Now it's back. I realized the car "changes" after a bit of offroading... don't know if this is just my imagination, or if correct, it could actually be proof or telling that some part needs servicing/changing. My G55 only has 35,000km on it... Someone stopped me and asked to buy by G (coz he can't afford the 2013)... should I sell, and get the 2013 when I can afford it, IF improvements have been done in that department on the 2013?

Interesting comment about the steering box, I have similar issues with vibration, when you pivot the front wheels by hand there is virtually no play but once at about half lock there is alot of play, this would suggest the box needs adjustment?. I've read somewhere only the dealer has the tools to do this, looking on wis I think that is the case. Has anyone had this done?
