Transmission/TC Fluid Flush...
I contemplated tackling the job myself but thought that I'd call the local MB dealer to get a quote. Does $498.00 plus tax for parts and labor sound about right? IMO it sounds extremely high!

It's the dealer, what would you expect??? My indy (non-Benz specific) mechanic is going to charge me $200 to change the filter and tranny/TC fluid but I am supplying all the materials.

This is something I would recommend the dealer do, you want to get the exact amount of fluid in or there could be serious damage to your tranny. Also, the engineers saw fit to make it difficult to drain the torque convertor which means you need to drain, drive, drain drive, etc... to get it all out. The dealership uses the old pump out method getting most, if not all, of it out.
The price you were quoted seems high, I had mine done about 2.5 years ago and paid $250 at the dealership for everything (filter, fluid, labor, etc...)

I don't know about BC prices, but in So Cal my local dealer has done mine 3 times. The highest price was in the $350 range and the low around $280.
I agree with you though. I do almost everything myself, but its money well spent not to take a trans fluid bath.
