first impression: Speed43 Airbox V2

Just received this beauty.

Right of the start, the box looks super nice and its nicely finished. It feels solid and it slaps together to the bottom piece of the airbox just like a stock one would. Speed43 mods the inside of the box to make for a super smooth airflow, removing the fins and covering the step on the top of the inside of the box. Not only is the box a lot bigger, it also doesn't have any barriers that prevent smooth flow of the air.

Also the box sits onto the engine with no extra effort whatsoever and the front cover snaps on just like it does with the stock box. I am unable to do full testing of the box due to my car being over due for a total suspension upgrade but I did take the car out for about 10 to fifteen minutes. Mind you I still have an old MAF sensor on my car and the box needs a day or two of driving to get as efficient as possible. The difference is immediately noticed and more obvious in higher rpms. At one point Id drop the car from third to second and id feel the back end break traction. So far I am very happy and I cant wait till my car is back on the road. I also have the modded elbow that George(Speed43) makes and that alone before the airbox arrived showed me just how restricted these cars are in the air intake areas.

After my 5.4 swap, this is definitely the second best c43 mod for the money.

I will do a full on test with plenty of pictures and videos in a few weeks but for now I leave you with a few pics and a clip from Speed43 himself.

Top notch work, I am super impressed.

Thanks Hayden.

This air box has a different design. I cut the whole top off and leave only the frame that's part of holding the air filters. Than I round out the box all the way around. I been wanting to do this for a long time. But I wasn't able to figure out how to do it and support it.

Also the inside gets a flatter surface without the fins/ribs and what I call a stair that's all across from left to right on top of the inside airbox. This stair restricts air flow. Air has to hit and than move up and than into the maf....So now the air flow is much smoother and faster.

I did not get to test the box much. But I did for a few hours. And I know once Pj gets his suspension and maf fixed his car is going to run really good.

The modded box with the elbow is a great setup. Anyone interested in this combo send me a PM or email. I prefer email if you're willing. Price is $525.00 for both including shipping within the USA.

Thanks.

Fantastic! It looks like to me, and you can correct me if I'm wrong, that you have increased the volume of the box. Increasing the volume of the box should give a increase in power when engine comes off idle because all that extra air will be sitting there in that huge pocket while engine starts sucking it in!

Nice job on removing the (stairs) too!

Thank you.
On this box I wanted better less restrictive air flow. Making it round will provide that. Has great air volume, more than needed really. Renntech did the air box round which I always liked. That's why I been wanting to do this. I really like this air box.

You're only a couple of steps away from making a carbon fiber box. I think the hardest part would be the mold, specifically the part where the screws fit, rest doesn't seem that hard.

Just curious, what is the weight difference between v2 and oem?

I was watching a video on how koenigsegg makes the carbon fiber rims for their cars and it really didn't look very complicated. I expect carbon fiber rims to come down in price soon when independents start making their own.

i could make CF now but who would buy it? Price will be higher. And no need to CF the bottom frame. Renntech just does the top portion only and that obviously makes sense. When I ship the air box it comes out to 10 pounds with cardboard box and packaging. It's very light it weight.

And a cf version would barely shave a pound or two. Cost 5x as much to make

Very nice improvement! I'd be interested in seeing how much of an increase it makes on the dyno over your V1.

I'd guess it'd be about the same, maybe 1 or 2 extra hp for every 10% increase in volume over the last version or something like that.

Will this fit under a w210 hood?

If you have a 1998-2002 would have to make it lower like the rentntech air box. How much lower you will have to measure hood clearance. If you like to proceed send me an email. Thanks.

Update: I now make the air boxes for the w210 E55.
