My FIRST AMG!! Problem already~
Just drove home my FIRST AMG! Finally up graded myself from imitation! A C36 with 110K Miles but in nice condition.
Slight problem now........The used car dealer gave me 3 keys and told me that's all they have. 1 key work with ignition but not door lock or glove box. 2 key (marked with letter U) work with door lock and glove box but not with ignition..
HUH?
Car fax report that car was never stolen, so probablly not new igniton. All keys appear to be MB origional......

a car that can't do the throttle reset.
its a 95 right?
the first key sounds like the valet key...normal functioning.
and the second two sound like the regular keys..but dont fit ignition? strange. my guess is probably new ignition system. cause carfax doesnt say anything about theft it doesnt mean jack shi*. carfax is wrong all the time.

Thanks a lot for the mighty fast reply! Felt so touched by the fellow AMG member..(tears tears)

Congrats on your new ride
Are these two keys slim or are they normal big? Because tree key are normal, two normal big keys for the door lock and glove box and one key without remote control and this is the emergency key.

2 keys: this should operate everything, battery operated remote lock, doors, glove box, trunk, ignition
1 key: valet key, it should be a simple piece of metal in a leather pocket... only operates ignition, door... does not operate glove box, trunk.

Steve's right. The dealer orders the key directly in Germany. You can't dupicate an MB key, yo need to order a new one for ~125$ (here in Europe).

If your key is just the regular metal key (which from reading it seems to be) it's real cheap to order them at the dealer. I was told for the regular metal keys, about $12, no biggie to get replacements.
If you have the alarm/switchblade key combo that would be expensive, probably over $100.

Sounds like the ignition lock tumbler was changed at one point in time. What I would do is order a new lock tumbler from the dealer. Since the dealler orders them by VIN number, it should come set to original specs which would then match the rest of the car locks (unless the ignition key is the original and they changed all othe other locks.....unlikely). Of course this means changing the lock tumbler....which shouldn't be too hard if it is like the W201. The new tumbler will also come with a new key as well.

Huh? Only ONE key works in the ignition and the other two only for the locks?
Hmm, my aunt's C36 has a regular metal key for some reason. Is this normal becuase the 1992 600SEL has a switchblade key with IR. I guess the IR switchblade was only for the 600SEL. It comes with sooo many keys!
2 Master IR Switchblades
2 Regular Master keys
1 Flat Key
1 Valet key
1 ?

Yeah, it's just the regular metal key. The dealer guy was surprise that the ignition key does not operate door locks since MB only replace door locks as well when ignitiona need to be replace.
Anyway, I am kinda surprise that the dealer REQUIRE a copy of ID and car registeration in order to duplicate key. Those dealer guys really don't mess around

Yes, all MB dealers require positive photo ID and registration to make a copy of your key for security purposes. I mean, anyone could come in with your VIN number and ask to have a copy of the key made because they order the keys by your VIN from Germany. I guess they have a whole database of VIN's and key signatures that belong specifically to your vehicle.

there was a story a few years ago about car theft using vin and obtaining keys from the factory... a guy copies down ur vin...goes to the dealer (a scummy one, or someone who is on the inside, probably sharing the profits too...)...and gets a copy of the keys...
