diagram muffler supports

does anyone have the diagram for muffler supports? my muff is hanging a bit low, I jacked it up a couple of weeks ago and found the rear support (its like a triangle) had slipped off. I slipped it back on but it still didn't look right to me. I took it to my tire place where they also do mufflers etc and they said everything looked ok. now it is hanging low again, guessing it slipped off again. I might not have attached it right or maybe it needs an additional clamp to secure the triangle brace on, not sure.

how's your rubbers?
dry and cracked like 65 years old crack hoe?

if your rubber hangers break your exhaust will drop on the ground

Check your muffler clamp that holds the muffler to the rest of the piping.

It gets loose and the muffler slides back causing it to come off the rubber hangers.

I that happen multiple times. Make sure you tighten the clamp while the exhaust is cold because it expands while hot.

If I recall, the muffler support has a screw thread on the inner end. After having mounter the rubber on the support, you can screw a small bolt with a medium size washer. That will stop the rubber sliding off. As mentioned, check that the clamps are tight and the muffler had not slipped backwards.

I got underneath there today and I could not slide the muffler forwards or back. how much power should I j=use to try and slide it? all my might or would it just slide easy if it is loose?

I reattached the rear hanger which was no easy feat. I had to jack up the muffler and loosen the support bolt. I think maybe I just need a new hanger as it still seems to hang very low on that side after attaching.
I jacked up the front of the car and got to the bolts by the transmission that hold the muffler in place. one I was able to tighten just a little and the cheap socket I used actually stripped off on the second one. I want to get under there and see if I can tighten them using a good socket, a bit worried I'll stripped them or snap them. would like to buy new ones in case I snap them. do you guys have the part numbers for those bolts? what are they threaded into? I don't want to snap the support somehow. also do you have the part number for the rear most rubber hanger? I think it might be time for replacing because it is hanging so low, what do you think

one that keeps coming off

after I attach it

this is the other hanger in the rear, this one looks fine

this is the hanger further towards the front, this one looks fine too

here you can see after it is attached, the left side still looks low. maybe it is too weak and hanging?

Ah, seeing the last photo it's clear that the muffler has twisted on the exhaust pipe. You need to loosen the clamp and turn the muffler until it's horizontal. You can support the muffler with your floor jack while doing this. However, most likely you will need to remove the muffler before as it will be corroded. Remove the rust and other deposits, clean the end of the pipe back to shiny metal. Smear some copper grease or a heat resistant ceramic grease used to protect brake pads and calipers and slide the muffler back on.

makes sense. thanks buddy, let's see how I feel tomorrow maybe I can do it quickly. Steve Patrick's day today, headed out for some drinks

any idea how much the muffler weighs? my floor jack is at the old house so the only jack I have here is the car jack, it worked for jacking it up and getting the hanger on.i think I can just disconnect it with the hangers on and work it that way.

I have been very lazy and not driving my car at all. today was a really nice day and I thought I could get under it and loosen that clamp you suggested. but I didn't see any clamp on the back of the muffler, the only clamp I saw was substantially further towards the front, probably around the passenger door area. is the clamp you are talking about this one?

i'd really appreciate if anyone has the diagram of the muffler supports just to be sure.

just that clamp is so far up, not sure rotating that portion of the exhaust would straighten out the muffler

Yeah that's the clamp. Need to get that freed up then align the muffler in the correct position with the supports in place then finally tighten the clamp, making sure the muffler is not too forward or backward. I checked the EPC and found some surprising diagrams. Under the 8 cylinder diagram, it looks like the exhaust for a six cylinder (C36 or other six engines w202) and the 6 cylinder diagram shows the C43 exhaust. I guess someone at the factory has swapped diagrams...

yeah those diagrams don't look right, they look like there are lined up already and you can't re-align, also my rear hanger on the passenger side of the muffler has some kind of metal stop (its pictured in post #5 third picture down)

yeah I need a new clamp. I think it's 3.5 inches? part number or confirm size and I can pick up generic at auto-parts store

I just pulled this one off. I am having a hard time lining up the muffler straight

It helps to lift it up off the grount, itll slide onto the pipe easier and will twist a lot easier.

I replaced mine with generic ss band clamps. Works a treat tightens perfectly and will never rust
The OE ones are not ss and will rust

Have you separated the muffler from the exhaust pipe? Clean the pipe end back to clear steel and do the same on the corresponding inside end of the muffler. Smear a bit of copper grease or heat resistant grease (ceramic grease used for brake pads and calipers) and reassemble. This way will ensure you that the muffler twists on the pipe sufficiently to enable the correct alignment. Set everything up , including the muffler hangers and when everything is in place and you are happy, tighten the clamp. Job done
