280 HP from 3.6 Liters: The C36 AMG
Dear AMG Private Lounge members,
The C 36 AMG was the first automobile to emerge from a collaborative development effort between AMG and Mercedes-Benz. The Mercedes-Benz C 280 of the “sport“ line formed the basis. For adequate performance, AMG equipped the limousine with a 3.6-liter, six-cylinder in-line engine with two overhead camshafts and four valves per combustion chamber. It was created from the 2.8-liter engine from Mercedes-Benz by enlarging the bore to 91.0 millimeters and increasing the stroke from 73.5 to 92.4 millimeters. AMG also installed special aluminum pistons that were very light and extremely smooth, then twisted the crankshaft and rebalanced it. This increased the compression from 10 to 10.5:1.
In the cylinder head a new intake camshaft forged by AMG was put to work. It opened the valve with a stroke that was about one millimeter larger than its series counterpart and permitted, thanks to a new cam profile, ten additional degrees of opening width. Larger exhaust valves provided for more efficient ventilation. These mechanical changes allowed the engine to breathe more freely. A second intake at the air filter box also served the same goal.
Following this performance upgrade, the 3.6-liter produced a full 206 kW (280 HP) and supplied a torque of 385 Newton-meters at 4,000 rpm. The sport sedan made the sprint from zero to 100 in 6.7 seconds. Despite the higher performance and good tractive power, the engine impressed through its elasticity and smooth running. The 4-speed automatic transmission was adjusted to suit the performance characteristics of the engine.
In the sport version of the C 280, the suspension was already set 25 millimeters lower; the AMG engineers lowered it a further ten millimeters. With the aid of special gas shock absorbers, they ensured an excellent compromise between comfort and sportiness. Is it possible to combine the qualities of a touring sedan and a sports car in one compact automobile? The C 36 AMG answered that question with a resounding yes.
Externally, the C 36 AMG was recognizable by its striking AMG design. That included a modified front apron. Two integrated conduits directed the airflow right to the brake unit. The AMG rear apron created not only a more impressive appearance, but also improved the qualities of the running board and side skirts from an aerodynamic perspective.
Best regards,
