Noise in cylinder head Chain/Adjuster?

Hi all,

Have a 55k miles. 1995 C36, has a rattle on cold startup which goes very quickly when oil pressure is up........ however when operating temperature at idle theres a diesel knock type sound from the from of the head ?? Revs out fine

Cam cover is off, when cold the inlet cam is Not Locked by the adjuster ? can move maybe quarter of a flat with a spanner - Is this normal ? OR should it be locked automatically when there's no oil pressure ?

1) How does the cam Adjuster operate in conjunction with magnet solinoid on the 36 ?

2) Is the a test for the magnetic solenoid ??

3) Is this dependant on the ignition being on and the system recognises no oil pressure so powers the solenoid to lock the adjuster ???

Many thanks for your help

I read somewhere that the C36 engines were noisy most of the time, but can't say if you have a problem with yours. With 55K I have doubts that something catastrophic will happen, but that's my 2p opinion
