Inline 6 - C43?

Hey guys,

I know there isn't official info. out about this yes, but wanted to ask in case anybody had any insider knowledge or speculation. Do you guys think the 2018 C43 will have the new inline six with "over 400" HP? I have a 43 coming in at the end of March, but am wondering whether I should just try to wait and get a 2018 in the event it will have the new inline six.

"Over 400" HP versus 362 in the current 43 is a pretty significant gap, hence my hesitation. I don't want to be kicking myself in 8 months for not having waited a little longer for a significantly more powerful engine with a faster throttle response (from the electronic supercharger) and smoother acceleration. Any thoughts?

That's engine variation will be worth the wait on all levels. It will even make its way into the S class

This is my guess as well (based on no information at all). I don't see MB being able to make the business case that it should discard the C450/C43 motor after only a couple model years. I'd guess that the inline 6 is going to start in the S class and work its way down the 43 line until it is finally in the C class.

That was my initial thought as well, seems like it would have been a waste for them to develop the biturbo 3.0 currently in all the 43 models if they were going to discard it after two years. As long as it isn't in the 2018 C43 then I'm not worried about it as I don't plan on waiting 2+ years to get a new car, but I would be fine with waiting until fall/beginning of winter later this year if I knew it was going to be in that model.

That inline 6 does look great! BUT... I am always cautious on new tech with the electric turbo and all.

I thought the in-line 6 architecture had quite a few disadvantages compared to the V6. Anyone knows the reason they want to make the switch all across the model range?

there are pros and cons for both V6 and Inline 6. I think the main issue with going to an inline 6 will be fitting it into the C class with a 4 Matic drive setup. Here is an excellent thread which discusses this in detail.

I highly doubt it's coming in 2018. More likely it's coming for '19 or '20.

Enjoy your car and don't worry about what might be coming down the line.

I still have an extremely hard time believing they will put it in the current car/facelift version.

An inline 6 and v6 have very different dimensions and if MB is going to keep the engine behind the front axle to keep dynamics intact - then they will suffer tying to stuff it in the current car.

They haven't even launched to new petrol I6 in the S class yet. So far, only the diesel I6 is ready for some markets in 2018. This means that it will be 2019 or later before the S class gets the petrol I6. So it will probably be another 3 years or more before it trickles down to the top tier E's and C's.

I believe the I6 is reserved for E50 AMG and the S-Class, and won't make it to C-class until W206 and C206.

2018 MY order guides are out and they're still V6.

I agree they could do probably do this with the S Class, but I imagine this would be a real challenge in the C Class.
