Opinions needed asap
Guys,
Need your opinion pretty bad as I am pretty torn on what to do
Lease is coming to an end on my current car. CLS550 p2/amg pkg.
This saturday i am supposed to close the deal on a C43 with p4
Do you consider this a downgrade? My other choice would be to go for a 540i as i'm trying to lower my monthly payments some as my oldest graduates from high school next year.

I wouldn't consider coming from a CLS550 to a C43 at all. The new C class is a beautiful car. It has enough room to travel with family and when you wanna have some fun you can as well.
I think you should stay away from the BMW 5 series as they have many electrical issues already. My friend is a technician at a BMW dealership and he says that the new 5 series coming off the truck to the dealership with check engine light, ABS light and in some cases not starts.
The C43 is a solid car and I think you'll be happy with it. Just make sure you get the performance exhaust option!

Have you driven a C43 yet? You'll be the best judge of it meeting your criteria as a daily driver once you've driven it.
I don't personally look at switching between cars as a downgrade or upgrade anymore. I really appreciate the value for money that you can get from some cars on the market. I can get 3 very nicely equipped Jettas for the price I'm paying for my car. If the Jetta met all my criteria, I would get it. It doesn't, that's why I'm driving what I am. As long as the car you are buying meets your criteria, don't worry about if it's an upgrade or downgrade.
As for the 540....I wouldn't get it. It has got to be the least attractive iteration of the 5 series in recent memory. It's looks like a previous gen 5 series with some body mods to make it look sporty. It's an underwhelming looking car as it currently stands. Your money is better spent on an E43 if that's the size of vehicle you are interested in. Much better looking....much more powerful engine... Subjective? Yes.

Oh it's most certainly a "downgrade"....
But it's still a sweet and more than capable sedan in it's own right.
Test drive it and you will know if it's a downgrade you could live with everyday. I know that I could, but I'm not you.

The c class is a downgrade but try the s class.. I think you will think the s class is an upgrade..you can buy a 2 year old s class with 10k miles for about the same price as a new c class

Thank you for all the replies so far guys. It does help to have the extra perspective.
Looking into leases only for the moment as I trade cars every few years and works better for me.
What is the typical lease payment difference between the C43 and E43?

I'm sure you can figure out the MB website payment calculator to give you a rough estimate.
It absolutely is a downgrade, 2 steps down, but it doesn't have to be a bad thing. C43 is a great car in its own right and your sensible approach to finances is your choice, however i think your head is certainly in the right place.
Take it for a spin and you will know if it does the trick. You may want to gamble on a Jaguar XF which may be one step lower but has a lot of the size similarities of the CLS. I think an E43 if the numbers work is a great choice too
