18 Winter wheel/tire swap vs 19" winter tire?

I just got my 2017 C43 sedan. Came with the 19" wheels and high performance tires. I've been on TireRack pricing out winter tires for the 19"wheels. Looks like the Pirelli Sottozero comes to $1043 before $80 rebate. Also priced out an 18" wheel set with Blizzak and that comes to $1113 before $80 rebate.

Price being essentially the same, what would you recommend and why?

This seems like a no brainer, swapping tires on and off of rims is more costly than swapping rims already mounted with tires. More importantly your 19" rims will get hacked with all the wear and tear of swapping the tires, as well as the bead on the tires losing integrity. Lastly wouldn't want my AMG wheels getting covered in road salt and winter grime. I will be buying 18's and tires for the upcoming winter in Ontario.

Pirelli sottozero 3 are awesome but go with 18. Blizzaks Will bè mushier so be ready for a différent feel.

^100%

Every time tires are swapped onto rims, the rims get scratched or something...period.

I have 18" AMG wheels/all-season tires as my Winter set up, takes me all of 45 minutes to swap out my 19" wheels/tires in my driveway...taking my time. Plus the 18" setup gives a smoother ride as well.

18's overall but I personally do not like Blizzaks. But to each their own.

I intend to get my 18" rims from Costco. They have rims specifically for MB, BMW or Audi. Very reasonably priced also. I will probably go with Michelins and add TIPS.

Blizzaks! Bridgestone is the best in general IMO

I wouldn't rule out the Continental WinterContact Si which is very much comparable to Michelin X-Ice3 and Blizzak WS80's

Hello All. New to the forum. It has been mega helpful even though yet to pick up my car.

Getting my c43 sedan in nov and I also have to think of winter tires up in northern ontario, canada. The dealer recommended 18" 7.5J ET33 back and front with pirelli 210 runflats.

I know - sounds like nobody is going that route but I would like to know if everyone uses the same offset back AND front on the winter tires.

I would not recommend you to buy those Pirelli runflats for the winter as they wear and ride terrible. Plus you'd be paying 3 times the price at a dealer.

I am in Winnipeg - so I get winter.

The run-flats are pretty harsh riding all the time. I can almost hardly wait to replace my summer tires and be rid of them. I have 18" rims Blizzaks for the winter. They work pretty darn well.

If you are in "Northern Ontario" the run-flat feature doesn't work for long drives anyway. I would buy a blow-up kit for the non run-flats. I keep meaning to do that myself....

Thank you for the advice. Because the car gets dropped off nov, I need the winter tires on it and dealer says they can't fit anything else for me. I will just use them till the slightest excuse comes along and switch. But you are right, can easily be a few hundred km to the next station up here in northern Ontario!

@FastE, others using winter tires -are you using 18 with same offset (ET33) all round? Sorry for hijacking thread a wee bit...

Yes. I'm using an all square set up for winter. Might be worth while for you to contact Simply Tire in the GTA and make a drive down for winters. And i'd stay away from Run Flats.

For the winter I am on 18's - with 225/45-18 all around. I ordered the package from PMCTire (Good service and pricing) and went with Replika Rims. https://www.replika.ca is the main web site, of course PMC doesn't carry them all - but it was handy to get them through one source.

Just purchased the O.Z Superturismo Dakar (Matte Graphite Silver) for my winter set up.
(Fr)-20x8.5(offset 30mm) and (Rr)-20x10(offset 26mm)
Went with the Pirelli Scorpion Snow's.
+TPMS and bolts needed for mounting.
Will post up pix once completed next week.
Car goes in for ceramic opti-coating this weekend.
