My current relationship with my dealership has been nothing but positive which contributes to my love for this car. Obviously that is gonna vary from place to place...

Thanks to everyone! Hope you all have the best luck with both the initial quality of your cars and the follow up down by your dealerships if anything does go wrong.
I think I am likely having the worser end of the spectrum of issues with my specific car - so please take with a grain of salt and don't let it completely discourage from buying the car. It's a great car and I can see being very happy with it if it didn't have some of these problems.

Actually, I want to add that rattles will vary depending on the road conditions, wheels, tires, lowering spring/coils and driving habits. Also, this is a C class, it's okay (in 2017 ) if it has some rattles...

2017 C43 Coupe owner here. My car (with 9000 mi.) rattles unbearably in most conditions. I agree with OP that this car is an enigma. It looks great and goes fast, but build quality, drivetrain, tires, and audio really ruin the experience for me. Like OP, I will likely return to Audi when my lease expires.

Do us folks on the other side of the pond have it better? I've no idea. I think I may have tuned some the noise out. There is some road noise on our awful tarmac, but on the whole the ride is good...

I had the c450 the first week it was released in mid Sept 2015 and I love everything about it especially after Awe touring exhaust and an AMR stage 1 tune.

Looking at exhaust systems now. How do you like the AWE exhaust?

Issues since taking delivery
I took delivery of my C43 sedan end of July 2017; first time I bought a car that had some miles on it (2600); issues from day one- scuffed wheel which dealer fixed, noise like a marble rolling in the side pocket of rear passenger door, creaking noises that sounded like they were coming from rear seats ( dealer replaced weather stripping in all doors which resolved the issue. Creaking. Ratteling noises coming from near the steaming column- replaced command console but did not resolve issue. Dealer added felt tape under molding all around the center console - did not resolve issue. Dealer just had the car for 4 Days, picked up and there was a white residue all around the molding and onto the Center console- apparently the tech used glue which I was to,d neeeded to cure. Waiting an hour for them to clean the console only for the residue to appear agains later that day. They are now telling me they need to replace the entire center console. Today the flat tire indicator came on, showed that the right rear tire had 47lbs, left rear 37 and the tow fronts under 36.
I am at my wits end and have gotten both the service manager and GM involved. Ready to have them take the car back. First Mercedes after owning BMW and Porsche, not impressed

Seems like US built C43 Sedans quality is worse

Warning!
Thread hijacked.
We already know the ups and downs of our c450/43, but what is the worst car you have e all ever owned.
I had an 04 Jaguar X Type 3.0 sport that was great looking. It was dark blue metallic with black leather and dark wood trim. I black chromed the wheels it it was gorgeous. The drivetrain however, was ****. The car blew it's transfer case within 3000 miles. The dealer said it wasn't aligned properly from the factory and it would slip into neutral while I was driving. They never did solve the issue and I gave my dealer hell over it. The final straw was when the service manager got into a car accident with it... 150 miles from the dealership.
They ended up giving me a replacement vehicle to finish my lease. I ended up with an 06 that was upgraded with carbon fiber dash, alcantara seats, ground effects kit, and black mesh grills. The car held up a lot better and I didn't have any trouble through the remained of the lease. My next vehicle was a Mk V Jetta, which was probably the best car I've ever owned. 0 issues in 3 years.
Anyone elsehave a horror story to share?

2017 sedan with 15000km, about 9300 miles. No rattles, no noises. Had a transmission issue that the dealer all but resolved (happens very rarely and easily remedied by an upshift or letting off the gas). Rides much better since I put the snows on (18" squared set up, Michi X-ice 3) and took the horrible Conti run flats off. Not sure if I'm gonna put them back on. I'm really enjoying the performance of the car and seriously contemplating a tune. For now though, gonna do a chrome delete, new tailpipes (not sure what to do with the diffuser/valence), and maybe a rear wing.
Been pretty lucky with my vehicles. Had a '95 Civic that ran like a top, a couple of Jeeps; a 2003 Grand Cherokee and a 2015 Wrangler, both ran good and were fun off road (Wrangler more so), a 2007 Camry that was reliable AF. I guess I just get rid of them before the problems start.

I’ve had my wagon for a year and 2 weeks... 16K miles... I came out of a 2016 GL63 (excellent and much bigger car).
i love this car.... it does everything that you could ever ask.
I had an initial issue with a temp switch in the transmission... cracked a windshield... and it always has a whiff of antifreeze.. can’t leave glasses in the overhead bin as they will rattle...but no other excessive rattles.
I daily drive in NYC and then the Island... is it fabulous as an everyday car. (I have a Jeep JK and turbo 997 stick as a comparison).
lastly, I’ve never had a car that gets as many thumbs up from people on the street as this wagon. Would I buy an AMG sedan?.. no. Another GL63, 63 Wagon, and GTR yes!

I've had my wagon for little over 6 weeks now. Going from a roly-poly soft crossover like the GLK/GLC does really make you notice how firm the suspension and run-flat tires are. As a wagon, it was built in Germany - I have noticed rattling when various items have been stored in the door bins and because of the firm suspension - I think there's like a greater chance to make noise to begin with - however I can't claim there is anything regular or obvious other than that. As for worst car I've ever owned.. that honour goes to my 2007 Mk V GTI. It was in the shop 18 times over its four year lease. At one point, the dealership had to call VW of America to get permission to repair it because the labour/parts were so astronomical. Unfortunately, Ontario doesn't have lemon laws or that thing or I would have exercised that option instead of waiting out the lease - but it was sooo fun to drive when it did work.

Coupe owner for 1.5yrs, from a bit up north. I thought my car was pretty rattle free other than one super loud vent rattle. But today, it was -3*C and I encountered an actually crap road and anything above 60km/h rattled EVERYTHING in the car.
Glad I did not have passengers because that would be extremely embarrassing.
Yes, the coupe has better build quality than sedan but make no mistake, it is still quite bad. Gotta go E-class and up for the "real" Mercedes apparently...

Would the coupes be better since they are made in Germany whereas the sedans are made somewhere else? Sounds like variance in assembly quality made from different locations/cultures.

Do a search guys, these rattles and issues are common across all body styles
You even see lots of E63S owners with the same complaints
I don’t think it’s a production location issue at all. Sad reality is that these cars by design, with all the different interior materials and plastics, will probably be prone to rattles and other noises
Best course of action is to test drive before delivery, especially if you can find some rougher roads, and check before buying
