C450/C43 Summer Tire Guide

I know a lot of you guys are unhappy with the factory tires that come on these cars. I will be switching out the P Zero runflats on my 19" rim here shortly and thought that I would share my research with you.
This will only help those of you looking for high performance summer tires.

First guide I used is the TireRack owner review guide for max performance summer tires:
https://www.tirerack.com/tires/surve...ay.jsp?type=MP

Second guide I used was Car & Dirvers "2017 Performance Summer Tire Test":
https://www.caranddriver.com/feature...e-test-feature

My conclusions:

The best summer tire:
Michelin Pilot Sport 4S
Price for 4 tires pre tax: $1,076.40
Wear Rating: 300
Best summer tire hands down, but comes at a price.

2nd Place:
Bridgestone Pole Position S-04
Price for 4 tires pre tax: $881.16
Wear Rating: 280
Near PS4S performance, but softer, quieter ride

Best Tire for the Money:
Hankook Ventus V12 Evo
Price for 4 tires pre tax: $654.86
Wear Rating: 320
Great tire for the price that you won't feel bad about tearing up

What were the thread wear ratings for the tires, I would assume in the order you posted them?

Just updated it with the ratings. Michelin also includes a 15k mile warranty with staggered tires which is a plus.

I'm on my 3rd set of Bridgestone Pole Position S-04. Very happy with the tire!

I'm stuck between those and shelling out the money for the Michelin.... What kind of tire life are you getting? Are the front sidewalls wearing out first on your 450?

I usually hear very good things about the hankook tire, very often referred to a cheap PSS (the more prevalent tire when hearing this). I was so convinced to try this tire I actually fitted them. I was let down, I was unimpressed with everything except the longevity of the tire.

Would pony up to the next step for the better tire. There are other tires that are good bang for buck, it just depends on what you expect out of the tire and being realistic about it.

1st set lasted me 10k miles including 2 track days, it would last longer but I had an incorrect wheel alignment in the front after installing lowering springs. 2nd set i simply destroyed by a stupid mistake (locked abs). Right now I'm on my 3rd set on my C43 and so far so good for 3k miles. I also had them on my old Genesis Coupe. I'd absolutely recommend them

I'm in Houston as well. You ever think about getting all-seasons due to the rain/low 30's temps?

All season tires are actually worse in the rain that summer tires. TireRack and Car&Driver have several articles that talk about that specifically.

In regards to the temp, these cars are all wheel drive and we are only in the 30s for a short period of time. I won't give up my increased traction from the summer tires that I can use for 9+ months out of the year. Summer tires aren't great in the 30s, but they are plenty safe given it doesn't snow heavily.

Have you looked into Continental’s DWS 06? I’ve had them on multiple cars and been happy with it! Can’t beat the UTQG either, at 500+. You might wanna check them out...

Very soft sidewalls, unless you live where the roads are excellent of course. In NYC they survived for less than a week.

I’m in CA... I guess I shouldn’t complain. How are the roads in TX? Isn’t that where the OP is from?

Yeah, roads in Texas are ok, we have good ones and bad ones.

On to the comment about the Continental tires, any tire that has a rating of 500 or anything near that is sacrificing traction for longevity. While that may make a great all season tire, I think its unnecessary in Texas or SoCal. The softer the tire and the lower the tread wear rating, the more traction you have. The drag radials I ran on my CTS-V had a rating of 00 and they would literally pick up rocks off the pavement. I probably shouldn't have, but I daily drove on the radials.

Tireracks’s test results show it to be pretty competitive with the other brands you were considering. I specifically chose this tire due to the treadwear and price without sacrificing a whole lot from its capabilities. With the c43’s negative camber and even more once you drop it, I just had to go with the one that had the higher treadwear. I wanted to get the Michelin PS4S, but decided not to until I get the K-mac camber kits.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the scale of 0-10 is based on type of tire, so an 8 for example in the summer tire category does not equal an 8 on the all season tire category. Atleast that is how I interpreted it.

I’m sure they take a lot of other factors when testing the tires they do test, including the vehicles used for testing each particular tire. In the end, it really is your choice. I just couldn’t justify the difference in price and treadwear between the michelins and contis, unless I’m able to correct the camber.

So I finally bought a set of tires. I went with the Michelin PS4S in factory 19” sizes. I had the factory Pirelli P-Zero run flat summer tires previously.

Pros:
-Ride is much smoother than the Pirelli tire could offer.
-Tire noise is not nearly as noticeable, especially on the highway.
-The front end grip really helps eliminate the understeer that was common on the Pirelli. The Michelin has so much more grip, I now notice how much body roll my car has.
-Michelin free tire warranty
-Best summer tire available.

Cons:
-The tire is expensive, over $1000 for a set on tirerack.com
-Not an option for those that have snow and ice during the winter months.

Great thread, btw. As far as treadwear, does a lower rating mean a longer life? For example, I see the PS4S have a 300 rating, while the Hankooks have a 320 rating. Which tire is supposed to last longer? Also, what is the general expected life cycle with normal driving? My last car was an 2017 Audi A4. I loved the OEM summer tires that came with it, but didn't check what they were before I got rid of it. I do remember that I drove approximately 30,000 miles on the tires (San Diego) and they didn't even need replacement by the time I was done. I mostly drove normally, but I'd say about 5-7k miles were spirited.

Lower rating means shorter life. Some track tires that are DOT approved have a 00 or no rating at all. Generally a tire with a 600 rating will last significantly longer than a 300 rating tire.

Most guys running the PS4S are getting roughly 15,000 miles from them, which is good for the traction the PS4S offers.

I ran Nitto NT05R radials that were not rated. They lasted around 4500 miles.

Just noticed how much cheaper tyres are here in the UK

£680 (880 USD) includes tax and fitting

Good list. Other tires I would recommend are the:

- Michelin Pilot Super Sport, if there are any left in stock (previous gen)
- Continental ExtremeContact Sport

Just had the 4S's fitted earlier today, first impressions are that the ride is SO MUCH BETTER.

Hopefully I won't have any troubles hooking up now and can get some mean launches
