Performance Exhaust Retrofit complete
First of all i would like to say thanks to a few members who helped adding their 2 cents were possible, you know who you are.
Long story short I impulse bought my car over an RS3 for a great price and didnt check the options on the car. After some time realised i need more sound and power from it. Added a racechip (hate on it if you want) which added performance gains. Started looking into exhausts and found that nothing really matches the sound of the PE in the aftermarket options.
By no means am I a mechanic or tuner this is just what I learnt about how PE cars operate the exhaust.
- Mercedes will not retrofit this and you will see why
- When car is off valves are open
- When car is started valves automatically close after 3 seconds or so
- When in comfort with exhaust button on valve open 30% or so
- When in sports + with exhaust button on valves open 100+ after 4000 RPM and full load and are variable at other RPMS
- There is a controller in the boot that controls these valves
- All the characteristics of the PE exhaust are driven by the exhaust and valve controller
- I contacted some tuners here in sydney and they said "we cant see a difference in the base map between car with and without PE"
Luckily for me there was this wrecked c43 amg with the PE as option.
After alot of discussions with other members and google research the theory was that most of the aspects of the PE exhaust i.e cracks on gear changes and burbles, pops and bangs were from ECU and a little from the exhaust. No hard evidence just theory.
The first idea was to get everything from this wrecked car.
Wiring + connectors
Special valve box thingy?
I soon came to realise the loom is "stitched"? into the main loom.
So i bit the bullet and bought the exhaust, I was ok if the car just sounded a little deeper but really was chasing the characteristics of a PE optioned car POP bang crack whatever you call it.
.
Difference in exhaust from cat back to muffler left side AMG right side standard sports exhaust. MAKE SURE YOU GET BRACKETS FROM PE OPTIONED CAR OR WILL BE FABBING SOME UP.

In summary, this has transformed the car. There is no drone on the motorway with the valves always open. Met with a friend earlier tonight and we drove both cars (his car has PE from factory). We could not notice any difference in exhaust note or power between the two cars (all done by butt dyno no dragy or cool tools available).
Ive had quite a few messages on the facebook page and just hope this helps whoever the next guy is thats trying to figure all this out.
Thanks
Dave
I’m looking to do the same thing and am interested to know if it was just the centre pipe and cat back section or the mufflers as well? As far as im aware the mufflers are also different?
Thanks for such a great write up!! 👍

Yes everything from the cat converters back. Midpipe and mufflers
first of all I would like to thank you for showing all of us, how the retrofit is made and whats needed. I think that helps a lot of C43 AMG drivers all around the globe.
Now I am doing the same as you did, but I only got the rear-end mufflers without the H-pipe thingy. I wanted to weld them onto the standard U21 mid-pipe.
What misses, is all the electrical stuff... ECU, wirings and button. I found out the following part numbers with your post and on other pages:
Button for center console: A2059057009
ECU in the trunk: A2059000227
What I wanted to know now: Are there any part-numbers for the wiring/loom between the electrical stuff? In my opinion you need a wiring from the ECU to the button in the front and a wiring from the ECU to the motors of the exhaust-flaps. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Furthermore, did you do the coding of the U78 by yourself, or did you have an expert who did this for you?
It would be awesome if you could help me here, because I don't want to make something wrong.
Thank you in advance!

Sorry didnt see this reply. I also messaged you on FB as i saw your other post.
I looked to add the valve controller and button. The issue was that I was told by MB specialist that the whole loom in the car is different part number. It does not plug into the valve controller and then plug into another connector. It goes from the valve controller and stitches into the main loom. This is why MB will never retrofit for you. You would have to rewire the whole car and then have a MB specialist do the coding. Too hard so i just bolted it up and it sounds the same as if you had PE from factory with the valves open all the time.
I would suggest you get the mid pipe because I dont know if its going to sound the same with the single mid pipe? Also another thing is that you will have to slightly bend the heatshield under the car or also replace that.
Thanks!

I am looking at getting a retrofit PE Exhaust rather than go third party but worried that at some point I might want the car in quiet mode and have to get under it with a stick to manually close them.
The Best of Mercedes & AMG
C400 exhaust is like the non PE 2017 C43 .. it has 2 resonaters.
I dont need the valvetronic thing. I'm fine with it open all the time if it works.
Please see below.

If you were going to go with c63 mufflers too, I know it has been done. A guy posted a vid of it on facebook. It sounded decent (obviously c63 exhaust does not make the car sound like a c63... just so we're all clear). Personally I think the c43 mufflers are key. The extra h pipe on the 63 mid-pipe gave my c43 a more v8 sound (again, nothing like the c63) bout only at idle, almost like it was cammed, at revs it sounded more like the stock perf exhaust but louder and a little less organized without that muffler on the mid-pipe (which I believe contains an x-pipe in it).
I was hoping i can find this set ( the one on left ) with mufflers :
But I'm not finding any... I'm not looking to get a C63 sound .. i know we can't it's V8 vs V6 but I'm just trying to enhance my setup, I'm already tuned but the car sounds like aprius 🤣🤣.
I’m thinking about cheapin’ out, just replacing the mufflers with some dynomax super turbos.

1500 for the midpipe
And 250 about for the brackets.
You cannot add the button because you need to program it. along with the kristonics sound module to control the whole setup..
So that puts you at 4,100 +without tax or shipping.
I rode along in a Car with a PE retrofit and honestly you don't need the valves controlled. It's pretty tame with basically no drone in the highway with everything open.
Its very expensive to get from the dealer brand new.
I decoded online the VIN of the car and it mentioned sports exhaust system and i wrongly thought that this was the AMG PE.
So now im a bit dissapointed as i really wanted the car with AMG PE.
The closest thing in the after market is the Logos Engineering Motorworks PE-Replica which I'm currently running. It's louder than the PE (OEM PE has 2.5" piping and the Logos PER has 2.75") but also has the same tone as the original PE.
It has electronic valves so you can close them for an extra quiet ride.
