2nd ECU

Hello,

Just a quick question, if I purchase a second ECU from a wreck, can it be cloned to my original ECU? If so, does the second ECU have to have the same specs as my car?

Thanks,

Can it be properly cloned without your original ECU not being cracked open? No. Each ECU is coded and married to only one car, and will only work with that car's immobilizer. But a tuner can crack open your original ECU and copy the file and paste into the second ECU of the wrecked car and both of them will work, BUT, it does not do anything for you, as your warranty will be at jeopardy because both the ECU has now been cracked open, and dealerships can catch both of them.

What you can do if you want to keep your original ECU untouched, is buy a brand new ECU from Mercedes through a licensed third party shop with proper authorization (Mercedes wouldn't sell a brand new ECU to YOU because it is a theft related part(TRP), but they will sell it to an authorized repair shop). Then you need to find a third party SCN coder (we have plenty in Canada) who will marry the brand new ECU to your car. Now you will have two working ECUs. Keep one, tune the other. The reason you need a brand new ECU is because it is not locked to any car. An used ECU is locked to the car it is coming from, so a SCN coder cannot marry it to your car. But a brand new virgin ECU can be married to your car by an SCN coder because it is blank.

All this is a huge waste of time though, as the best tune for our car is a JB4 piggyback which traps considerably faster than any full tune.

It seems unlikely that anybody other than Mercedes Benz would have the hardward/software to do that, even if you had a 2nd ECU. Somebody please correct me If I am wrong.

And 3rd party SCN coder can do it if you bring him a brand new ECU. It has to be Brand new, can't emphasize that enough.
