To create pops and flames, a tuner adds extra fuel briefly when the usual fuel supply is stopped. The idea is that while decelerating, running the engine rich leads to unburnt fuel moving down the exhaust, possibly igniting from the heat in the pipes. Essentially, this procedure triggers a small explosion where explosions aren't typically anticipated. Potential issues there across the board, so up to you to weigh the risks. You can get a milder tune that would be a little safer (or just run the aggressive map now and then.)

I think the main risk is damaging your catalytic converters. If you're running catless, there shouldn't be much of a problem.

There is the danger that an excessive amount of "burbling" may break your reputation as a "serious car guy" and put you more into the "boy racer" category.
