Modding the C63

Modding the C63
I'm new to the AMG world and have a couple questions.
I've been considering the Audi S5 for some time now, but there's just something about the raw look of the C63 which really catches my eye. Plus, after taxes my S5 would be right at the C63's base price and stretching myself a bit more for 100 more HP and almost 120 more pounds of torque is quite tempting. Thanks.
- I'm wondering just what would it take to "un-detune" this 6.3L V8 back to it's rightful 500+hp place? Is this as simple as a different ECU chip replacement or something much deeper (costly) than that?
- My dealer seems to think the C63 will be fully loaded with only iPod integration and panoramic sunroof as options. I think he's a moron. I know almost every AMG has the expensive sport package option which includes LSD. My question is, does LSD help at all during the winter on snow? I'm not in an area that gets a lot of snow, but it's not uncommon either. I certainly understand the advantages of LSD from a track perspective, but trying to get a real world perspective on other conditions.

Most likely ECU reflash by any of the companies that do it (Renntech, Veloce performance, Kleeman, etc...) and unrestricted exhaust will give you the full 500+ horsepower. This is why most people are so excited about this new model. It's compact, somewhat light, and has a strong naturally aspirated engine with a decent amount of torque. No intercooler crap to worry about and it will either be equal or stronger then the more expensive AMG models excluding the 65 (but it will keep up). The handling may be the best yet excluding the SLR. This car is going to ROCK. Interior seems a bit weak because it is a C class. Options, who knows. I hope it gets parktronic and keyless at the very least. Pano and distronic I doubt but again who knows?

FWIW -I think I read that the E63 guys managed to squeeze another 10-20hp just by ditching the charcoal lined air filters and replacing them wth K&N's.

1. I have heard that the C63 uses a different airbox, ie more restrictive. This could cost a few bucks, and maybe Hood mods to fit if there is a clearance issue. As far as ECU, I haved to beleive that the BIG 3 will have a flash, in a dash for this, ha, ha.
2. YES LSD certainly helps during snow, because BOTH wheels will get equal power instead of just one. Although why would you want to drive her in the snow is a whole nother question
See yeah
Oh yeah, the C63 looks like a shark from the front

Thanks guys. Appreciate the input. Very excited to see the equip & base price on this one. I know some MB officials said they were targeting $63k, but I've also read their goal is to undercut the M3. My guess is a little bit of both. If the M3 comes in at $57-$59k as some are predicting, I wouldn't expect the C63 to undercut it on pure base price. My guess is it'll come very well equipped at $63k and a similarly equipped M3 would be ~$65k...but then add $7k for the performance pack on the C63. Sure wish they'd offer LSD as a stand-alone option, but I'm extremely doubtful of that.
lol most of my lady friends I've shown pics to used the word "walrus" - but I still like it anyway.

in regards to the air boxes.. that should not be an issue. Remember the SL55 boxes on our C32's?
From what we heard from the Director of AMG was the following:
detuned due to a different engine mapping and smaller restrictive airboxes.
It would be as simple as getting E63 boxes and having the right map or ECU flash from Kleeman, RT or Powerchip and your are there.
There was never a mention about exhaust or cams or TB from the Director of AMG.
Getting this thing to 500hp will not be a issue, however it will take some times before the tuners will have it ready for use.

Brabus already has a tuning program for all 63 models. 550 HP!!!
ECU reflash, Sport airbox, High flow Cat.
"The BRABUS power kit comprises newly programmed engine electronics with special mapping for injection and ignition. But that’s not all: The intake side features a sport air filter for improved supply of combustion air. The exhaust side features high-performance metal catalysts with low back pressure that also ensure that the tuned V8 engine meets stringent EURO IV emission limits."
Here's the details:

My dealer seems to think the 030 package will be available in the US, but he's just guessing. It better be.
The LSD is a must. I added the Quaife to my C32 and yes it helped out a LOT in the snow.

According to MB EPC parst guide, the airboxes and exhaust manifolds are the same on C63 as on E63. Thus the restriction will be in exhaust and ECU tuning. Both of those are easily upgradeable.

I can't wait to see you dyno one of these cars..
I'm going to guess it will be 450 very strong horses... more like 470
around 380+ to the wheels.

Vadim, has MB implemented some type of "tamper seal" on the new 63 ECU's?

I just read an article regarding MB releasing new supercar in 2010 which has 6.2l engine with 100hp/liter (NA i guess). If this tells something about 63´s tuning potential, C63 will be a real monster after good tuning...

I'm not disagreeing with you about the potential of the 6.2L engine, but the 65 is already producing 100 hp/L, and you get 123 hp/L from the 55 engine on the SLR. So why does MB want to detune their next supercar to only 100hp/L ?

I know that, I guess I just need to rephrase the question. Why does MB want to ditch the forced induction concept and get only 100hp/L for their next supercar ?

ECU Flashes
If you flash your ECU, I'm sure MBZ (just like Porsche, Audi and BMW) will know. Even uploading a program to your ECU without taking it out of the car can be detected. It's a basis for declining warranty coverage.

Although iv'e always gone by the theory "If you play, You pay". But it is a bit harder to hide a blower & n2o from the dealer.

Unless you buy a RENNtech ECU and have it installed at an authorized RENNtech Mercedes dealership.

about mercedes 63 in general, i was talking to the guys from renntech and also managers from a mercedes that is a family friend. they both said the same thing that AMG came out with the 63 for temporary use. there are not many upgrades that will be out or come out for them. they are really pushing a different technology and are developing it already and have announced it from what i heard. with that said i have also heard that the C63 is the first AMG car that has been built from ground up by AMG themselves and not just modified to fit.
