And - here's the video to go with the Motor Trend article:

Disappointed in the amount of annoying background music and not enough of a side-by-side engine growl comparison. Doesn't sound like they were really opening up the C63 on any of those drive-bys.

A good article. I agree that M3 can be overall better car, however I'd pick C63 because better exterior, more power, amd bigger. Did I mention that C63 is cheapest?

You must be joking. Take the MT estimates with a HUGE grain of salt (especially on the M3). They pegged the S5 at $55k and it came in $5k less.

RS4 - First, $69k is wrong. Base price on the RS4 is $66.9k, not $69k. A FULLY loaded RS4 is $71k.

M3 - Read the M3 forums and you'll see the common belief is the M3 will come in at a ~$58k base (though BMW is known for having a stripped-down base). Decently equipped the M3 with DSG will be ~$65k.

C63 - It's been stated the C63 is targeting $63k for base, but that's w/o LSD which is standard on the M3 & will run us about $6-7k on the C63...not to mention the premium package adding a couple k more. I will be pleasantly surprised if the C63 isn't the most expensive. I've thought a lot about picking up the C63 without the P30 package, but that would be silly for the amount of torque this thing's pushing out.

I just refer to the article. I guess all numbers are speculations anyway (except RS4). I still keep hope that C63 will be cheaper. Why? Take C and 3 series, and you should find that C is cheaper than 3 series. It is only way for Mercedes keep good sales numbers. MB did a lot R&D in this model, so they should be interested in fast ROI.

They are in different segments due to price difference.

Has anyone seen the exact same comparison, but for the December 2008 issue of European Car?

Not really. Yes, manufacturers buy magazine ads and loan cars to the journos to drive and evaluate. And occasionally, they hire journos to write for company magazines, etc. on the side.

But the vast majority of folks who regularly write for the major car magazines are very good about protecting their objectivity and thus, their reputations.

Because of the 1,000's of miles they've logged in a wide variety of cars, I value their opinions. I've never bought a car just on the strength of press reviews. They have helped me eliminate cars from my shopping lists and have steered me toward features they found appealing and away from features they found problematic.
