Rear fender Question

Does anyone know the reason for the rear fender "extensions" that I have seen on most, if not all, of the non-US c63s? I thought initially it may have to do with the 19" wheels that are not offered here, but they show up on european models with 18's or 19's.

That said, if it IS an issue with providing "more room" for the 19's, and since we wont be getting those wheels here in the US, we dont get the extra "lips" on the rear edge of the wheel wells, will there be any issue with aftermarket 19" wheels? is this some rear wheel well modification?

Please see borrowed photos below for reference:

I believe that it's not to do with the 19"'s as they are the same width as the 18"'s.

I think it may be to satisfy a DOT requirement on wheel protrusion though given 9.5 rears. If this is the case, it's the only real cop-out on the whole car - sticking bits of plastic on rather than fitting flared wheel arches, as they have in the front. I guess it would mean re-stamping a whole additional section of the car and they wanted to avoid that cost? Looks like we may get lucky in the US if we don't get them? Makes me feel better about getting stuck with those orange lights on the fenders that OUS markets avoid.

Can anyone confirm?
